"The Remixes" album ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #7 From: daniel.j.delsavio.1 @ nd.edu (Dan Del Savio) Date: Fri, 25 Aug 1995 11:12:05 -0500 Hello all- I was just browsing thru the internet cd stores and i came upon an album by our guys in CDBonsai! called "urban fascination". Can anybody shed some light to what this is. And also what is the difference b/w Thw white funky and Zurich 1983. I have the Zurich cd, but i though they two were the same. Let me know if anyone has any ideas on the subjects. Dan ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #7 From: "MARQUEZ-RICAH" Date: Fri, 25 Aug 95 09:53:04 CST In response to the person who wanted to know about Level 42 muzak, yes I have heard a few tunes converted to these tame versions. "Something About You" was done up with a horn and violin section which reminded me of a 70's disco song. "Children Say" was performed by a flute, some violins, and a some percussion. Finally, "Lessons in Love" was done on an acoustic guitar with back-up rhythm and bass guitar and percussion. Actually not a bad cover. These songs were heard in department stores. I have also heard the beginning of "Heaven in My Hands" for the introduction of the Atlanta Hawks (the basketball team) at a home game. Also, a radio station in both Atlanta and Chicago use/d "Hot Water" as the background music for their traffic reports. My point is that L42 seems to pop up in unusual places, at least to me. Maybe we'll hear a sample of L42 in a rap song? "I don't wanna work, I wanna bang on me drums all day..." The Two Hearts Collide remix is one of the best on the disc, I'd say. I didn't really appreciate this song until I heard this, the Bass And Drums version. Much of the track is so sparse that all you drummers and bass players out there can get an excellent idea of what is really going on rhythm section wise. The original (Staring At The Sun) version buries Mark King quite deeply, and I for one was surprised to hear all the little fills and rhythmic trickery (i.e. classic King) going on. The Remixes is Polydor 314 513 085-2, released 1992. ...Alex... Your work is very much appreciated!! Jodi, sorry to hear the Boston area is losing you. Good luck with the move (yuck). I am not up on the Level side of New York City, but I do have one suggestion for you and others in the vicinity of the Big Apple: don't miss fellow Levelhead Jeff Thacher (Crazylips) live on stage with ROCKAPELLA at the Bottom Line (15 W. 4th Street, at the corner of Mercer, just off Washington Square Park in beautiful Greenwich Village) on Wednesday Sept. 6. Rockapella will be doing two shows that night, at 7:30 and 10 pm; tickets for each show are $17.50. When last I checked, there were still tickets available for both shows, but be warned: they often sell out in advance. (For out-of-towners: it is possible to mail-order tickets.) For information, call the Bottom Line's box office at 212/228-6300. There was a mixed tape of funky music wafting through the place when all of a sudden I heard 'way up high above the sky, all her beauty passes by....'. One of my friends said 'this must by a remake of that Level 42 song'. I told him that it was the original. Everyone at the table knew the song and remembered when it came out (and _none_ of them are LevelHeads). It was nice to hear some of the older tunes seeing the light of day, and that there is some awareness of their stuff pre-World Machine. Question: Has anyone bought the latest Incognito (100 Degrees and Rising)? The digest was down when it came out, so none of us have talked about it. I happen to think it's great. It's much better than Positivity IMO, and has about five distinct styles on it. The band is excellent, but I do miss Maysa Leak (the two replacements are OK, but can't hold a candle to her). The last track is an instrumental called Jacob's Ladder that has some excellent bass playing on it (sounds like a combination of Jaco and Marcus Miller); in fact the first half of the song has the bass playing the lead. Anyway, can some of you give your comments? ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #7 From: fortnum @ wat.hookup.net (Rich Fortnum) Date: Fri, 25 Aug 1995 14:28:37 -0400 I am a big L42 fan. Who can get me extended plays, rare disks, and the sort. I'll even go for tapes. :-) Cheers. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Rich Fortnum (aka BeeRich) F & M Breweries Limited Guelph, Ontario, CANADA fortnum @ wat.hookup.net ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #7 From: Rob Kadel Date: Fri, 25 Aug 1995 17:36:48 -0400 (EDT) Hey all! Anybody got a lead on any live stuff from the Forever Now tour? I realize there isn't much talk about the CD release any more, but if anyone has any bootleg stuff, I'd be interested in it. Let me know... Thanks! Rob ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #7 From: "Julian Arnold" Date: 25 Aug 1995 12:08:34 -0700 Hi Eric, A response to your question... I bought the Remixes in august of '92, about a month after it was released in Ireland and I've practically played it to death!. You'll find the versions of Something about you, Lessons in love and Running in the family can be found on the Platinum edition of RITF, The Chinese way on the CD version of Pursuit of Accidents and The sun goes down (living it up) is on the Cassette version only of Standing in the light. The other mixes, Children say, Hot water, Flying (on the wings of love), Two Hearts collide and the immortal Love games are new. When I first discovered this album I thought "Oh well this can't be anything new, if you have all of the (CD) albums, you're pretty much set" but whe I played it I found in addition to having the very cool existing mixes I now had some gems too, definitely a piece to add to the collection. I have to defend the "Techno-type" of sound they have, as in a very "eighties digitally sampled sound" as mentioned by another Digesteer, you are correct in pinpointing the 'feel' of the sound being very '80's, but my view is that LFT's original sound, (and I stress 'original' since no-one else sounds quite like them!) has evolved over the last couple of years, during the 80's there was more emphasis on keyboards and bass combined with a sophisticated percussive sound with the guitar lines in the background, THAT was LFT's coup de grace but nowadays there's more focus on shreeking guitarbonk metal sounds, although good when played well, its place is with the Van Halen fans of this world (with respect to Van Halen and their fans). I thought LFT's "Staring at the Sun" didn't reflect their true sound (since the brothers Gould left) but they made up for it with Guaranteed. A friend of mine once said they should have renamed themselves "Evil 42" after SATS in '88. Anyway, Eric and guys I've nattered on too much already, typical for an Irishman!! later dudes..
