Glad to see the digest up and running again...I was going through a slight withdrawl! Thanks Eric - it was definitely worth the wait! So...I'm moving to NYC next weekend (agghh - along with millions of others...I HATE moving) and I hope to pick up a few tips from all you NYC Levelheads about all those cool places I've just *got* to visit - any suggestions?!? My e-mail address will stay the same for a while - as long as Harvard doesn't figure out that I'm no longer on their payroll! I hope to get a real account somewhere in NYC soon - I'll keep you posted. Hope everyone had a good summer - glad to be back on the level... -jodi ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #6 From: Rob Kadel Date: Thu, 24 Aug 1995 12:19:55 -0400 (EDT) I suspect I'll not be the only one to write in a review of The Remixes, but I haven't posted yet to the new site (thanks again, Eric) so I thought I'd get in my two cents. The album has the following tracks: Living it Up Something About You Children Say Hot Water Running in the Family Love Games The Chinese Way Wings of Love Two Hearts Collide Lessons in Love The Hit Combination (Lessons in Love, Hot Water, Running in the Family, Children Say, Something About You, Starchild) Overall, it's not bad. The remixes of Something About You, RITF, and Lessons in Love are not too hard to find elsewhere, though, (e.g., the Platinum Edition of RITF), so they're repeats. Living it Up has many more influences of the producers of Standing in the Light, the guys from Earth, Wind & Fire(?). Love Games is nothing impressive, really. On the up side, Children Say is excellent! And although Two Hearts Collide sounds a bit "empty" at times, Mark does a few measures of a good riff at the end. The Hit Combination is also quite fun. Cheers! Rob ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #6 From: "Friesen, Alex" Date: Thu, 24 Aug 1995 14:53:17 -0500 Yes, there certainly is an album of remixes called, of all things, "The Remixes". Points for originality there. I highly recommend it, as it contains several versions which were previously only available on vinyl. Of particular interest are How Water (making it the fifth version I have of this track), Something About You and Lessons In Love. All three of these tracks contain bits of the songs which are not present on the original (album) versions. Something About You and Hot Water contain "rap-ish" bits which I know some of you have heard, but others probably have not. (S.A.Y: "Something 'bout the way you are / can't go back we've come too far / nothing is the way it seems / we're all safe here in our dreams...". H.W: "Blow the bugle, hoist the flag / learn a trade to please your dad / arm the forces, not the mass / taking orders is a gas..." (or something like that).) Lessons In Love includes most of what I believe was the tag from the original single release. Some of the mixes are quite comedic in their mid-eighties-ness (remember when digital effects and editing were first discovered?), and some you can get elsewhere (the controversial "Chinese Way"), but I find myself listening to this album fairly regularly. All this is just off the top of my head. I'll see if I can dig up a track list and catalogue number. ...Alex... ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #6 From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Thu, 24 Aug 1995 18:31:45 -0400 (EDT) Heyooguyz... For all you AOL folks out there (and there are plenty), I sent Elson T. a note asking him if he had been receiving the digests. Since I've been getting alot of worried email from AOL'ers about late/missing digests, this was basically just a "sanity" check. He responded with the following: > Internet-to-AOL mail is SLOW, sometimes as long as 2 days (in some instances, > "Snail Mail" might get to a destination faster). I tried it on a friend > of mine who had both an AOL account and a normal Unix-style account. The > Unix account got the letter (which was CC'ed to both addresses) like 7 > minutes later, the AOL account, about a day and 4 hours. Note that there *have* been several late mailings of the digest since the *new* list software has been up. Also, if you don't receive a digest every day, it may simply be because there just weren't any messages posted. Thanks yall - Eric -- || Eric J. Date: Thu, 24 Aug 95 18:37:00 PDT Greetings all! This is from someone who missed the Level 42 digest as much as others miss the morning paper. . . it's good to be back!!! EH> I think that there is a full-length album of remixes... does anyone have EH> it and can post a review? To help the man who makes this all possible, I picked up the Level 42 - remixes (actual name of the CD) about 4 months ago while perusing through the Import section of a local record store (are they still called record stores?) and would be happy to give you my impressions. If you think All Over You or Take Care of Yourself aren't quite 'techno' enough, then you'd love this Remix selection. The remixes were certainly done with a 'dance' feeling in mind. Most of the songs have been extended with the digital effects altering them just enough to make them sound different, but all in all it's still good ole L42. Sorry I don't have it handy or I'd name the songs. . . but my personal impression of the CD - if you like Level 42, you'll 'enjoy' the sounds. I'd be happy to make some 'samples' (samples of samples...) in .au or .wav and attach them to a note or possibly slip them out on an ftp site if anyone is interested. Review #2 - BobC's tapes. Excellent! I would encourage anyone who hasn't seen them play "live" to snatch at least one tape. I knew it was going to be a treat when on tape #1, their interviewing the band for a German music show, and the person says "Dos iblen weeben lauken - Level 42, funky" I got a good chuckle. On another clip; from a British comedy sketch, they actually seem to equate David Gilmore's ability with Mark Kings. I wondered how many L42 fans would watch this and say - "I recognize King, but who's that other guy?" One last thing. I've never heard a Muzak version of any Level songs, but while flipping through the boob tube during the hiatus, on two separate occasions a television show called EXTRA (sort of a flashy Entertainment Tonight) used Physical Presence as background music for a story about the movie star who picked up the $10 prostitute. Later on, they used Leaving Me Now for a story about a model committing suicide. Anyone know if someone of this show has a L42 fetish? We can only hope. . . . Oh, and one last, last thing. I would also like to thank Afu for the Forever Now lyrics. Like a (pee brained) dolt, I threw away the envelope with his return address. Afu, if you're out there, I'd still like to at least reimburse you for the postage. . . you wouldn't believe what I was 'singing' in place of "ego & pride - the great divide"
