I really liked Words of a Mountain. Always wished he would tour with the band, not that Mike was anything less than incredible; I just wanted to see Wally live, too. I remember reading an interview with Mike in which he said that his and Wally's playing was essentially interchangeable, because their approach was so similar. As a keyboardist, they both, IMHO, are exceptional. A bientot, Randall Randall R. Powell ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #1 From: M.C.Ashby @ lut.ac.uk (Martin Ashby) Date: Wed, 16 Aug 1995 11:32:29 +0100 My general tactic for buying CDs here is avoid the big names. Can't remember the last time I was inside an HMV store... We have two pretty good independents here in Loughborough, undercutting the major high street retailers by 2-3ukp. The Left-Legged Pineapple (yup, fraid so...) even has a 'pre-owned' section, which includes promos (all with the words 'not for resale' printed in big letters :-). I haven't paid more than 1ukp for each L42 CDsingle I've bought there. World Machine (the album) at 5.25ukp was a bit of a bargain, too... Anybody want me to take orders? BTW, the banner looks lovely, glad to be back - hurrah for Eric. -Martin ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #1 From: andrew @ farquhar.u-net.com (A J Farquhar) Date: Wed, 16 Aug 1995 19:57:18 -0000 Hi there Level 42 fans I have just joined the L42 mailing list please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Andrew Farquhar and I am 33 years old. I first heard L42 on the radio, when I used to drive my girlfriend home from my house, which is in Wallasey, Merseyside in the England. The song was 'Turn it on' and after buying the album 'Level 42', I`ve been a fan of the band ever since. This is still my favorite album and I consider it to be the bands best. The main appeal of the bands sound to me, has to be Mark King`s bass playing style. I like the sound of the bass as an instrument and no one plays it quite like Mark does, allthough I also like Stanley Clark`s music. I have seen the band many times live, but the most memorable has to be the first time that I saw them at the Royal Court in Liverpool, England in 1983. The atmosphere was electric and I will never forget it. This venue was also the last time that I saw the band last year, again it was a superb concert and I was disappointed to hear that the band was splitting up. Especially as I considered the latest cd, 'Forever Now' to have been the best that they have made for some time. Still I hope that i will continue to hear work from the Mark and the others as they hopefully continue to work on other projects. I hope that this mailing list will allow me to keep up with news of the band, and of the many fans that they have round the world. PS. I apologise for the probable spelling errors but there`s no spell checker on this mail program. In response to your question about CD prices, they're a hell of a lot cheaper than what they are in England. Usually, when I'm in England, I only purchase UK releases unavailable in North America. That makes paying 12 pounds worthwhile to me. Here in Canada, I would estimate the following: (1 pound = 2.20 Canadian dollars) (and including all local Canadian taxes, about 15 percent, like the VAT). New Releases: 7 pounds Older Issues (older than 2 years): 8 - 8.5 pounds (These prices are for Toronto, which as a large city has many stores, more competition, and therefore lower prices). Please be aware that specials (as in England) exist, where CDs can be had for as little as 5 pounds or less; special items or import items (i.e. from UK directly, unavailable in Canada) can cost over 10 pounds. My Level 42 CDs have cost (on average) about 7.50 pounds. I think that CDs are generally cheaper in Canada than in the US (due to currency exchange). You can also join CD Clubs where I've been able to buy about 15 CDs for an average price of about 3 pounds!! But the selection is sometimes lacking. Any other questions? Please write. Believe it or not... Tower Records has "Fait Accompli" (at least the one in NYC on West 4th Street does). You should also try Tower Video as well. Try some internet CD stores, "telnet://cdeurope.com/" carries a lot of L42 stuff, they have a laser disc "Guaranteed, Live" ($$$$$), but not VHS. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Guy Davis Tenex Corporation (708) 439-0200x264 1850 E. While I appreciate the "thanks", the credit for the SMOKIN' homepage goes to Vince Mora . It's great to have the list back. Kudos to Eric J. Hansen for all the time/effort/sweat/money/love he's put into it. It's great to hear some familiar voices, er, I mean, see some familiar typing after a low Level summer. Thanks to BobC for the video tapes. Some people thought I was crazy to send my hard earned cash to some guy I've never met. (Not that it was enough to let him move to Brasil and start a new life or anything.) BobC sent me tapes 1, 2, 5 and 6, and I've been jotting down a few notes as I sit glued to the screen. Lolita and Kim, I'm glad I'm wasn't the only one to start howling with laughter at Mike's early image. I've seen album cover still shots before, but to see him on stage with the heavy Earth Wind and Fire influence is a comedy special not to be missed. Another moment of hilarity occurrs during a two song lip-sync by the band - I think it was one of the German shows. At the end of the first track Mark raises his hands as if he's going to smooth his hair (or pick his nose?), when suddenly the next song starts (i.e. the tape kept running). Mark gets this shocked expression on his face, and quickly springs into Milli Vanilli mode, missing only the first bar or so. For those of you with the tape, you must be paying close attention at this point. It goes by so fast that I had to rewind just to confirm what I thought I saw the first time around. Enough babbling for today. ...Alex... "Fashion fever / forever brand new / always out of date" ------------------------------ Subject: Level42 Digest V95 #1 From: The SCATMAN Date: Thu, 17 Aug 1995 00:36:14 -0700 (PDT) The July issue of BASS PLAYER magazine (with Tony Levin on the cover) has a blurb about Stuart Zender, the 20-year-old bass virtuoso of Jamiroquai (who's only been playing for a mere 4 years). He plays a Warwick 4-string as well as a custom Warwick 8-string. The L42 connection? He mentions his influences: "Stanley Clarke...Mark King..." One listen to "Mr. Moon" and "Manifest Destiny" on Jamiroquai's "The Return of the Space Cowboy" album and you probably won't be surprised... Elson
