Bugging RCA rca = no response ------------------------------ From: lolita @ InterServ.Com Date: Fri, 9 Jun 95 06:05:52 PDT Subject: The Sun Goes Down (Oops!) Before I get corrected by 500 people, I will correct my post from yesterday. I also just received a copy of Live at the Hammersmith Odeon, and that is where I heard the great version of The Sun Goes Down, not The White Funky. Sorry for the confusion. NAME: Scott Baugh AGE: 23 STATUS: Student SCHOOL: Radford University (VA) MAJOR: Music (w/ business concentration) INSTRUMENT: Percussion Yes, I will graduate this year!! I became a leveller in 1988. There was a small fan base at the high school I attended in Nashville(McGavock - Helluva Drumline!). I was drawn in by the intense slap-a-hell-o-bass-n-sing-King and the smooth linear grooves of Phil Gould. This brings me to my first question. Whatever happened to Phil? That guy could really groove. I'm currently seeking the box set that I have seen listed in the Home Page, but, no one around here has heard of it. My CD collection is severely lacking the Level. I attenpted to order "A Physical Presence" from a local record store recently and they never got it. What gives? Anyway, it's great to see some support in the States for such a great band. Drew R., Brian F., J Dees, or any of that McGavock fan base, if you are out there, drop me a line. Thanks Y'all Scott p.s. The Yen being what it is, any album > from Japan is gonna cost around $38 to $40. It's worth it. Try > "Vocobeat", or album #2; "From New York" to start. :) As long as we're on the subject of Rockapella, let me add my own endorsement for the group. Not only is their own music fantastic, but one of the members introduced me to Level 42 (and this digest); I've been a fan for about 2.5 years (thanks, JT!). As for Rockapella albums to buy, I would recommend #4, ("Vocobeat") first, but would add Rockapella's fifth album, "Out Cold," to the list of must-haves (even at the outrageous import price). On most days, I would put it ahead of "From NY" (#2); production values are superlative, and it has arguably their best songs on it. (The reason for the dilution of my endorsement of "Out Cold" is that it's about 60% Christmas/holiday tunes -- wonderful material, but with a limited listening season. Though I confess their "Rudolph" is a year-round fave...) BTW, for anyone who is interested, I run a mailing list for Rockapella on the Net. It's not like this one (yet) -- so far, it is used just to keep people informed about upcoming concerts and appearances. And they are doing some *serious* touring this Fall in the U.S.! If anyone wants to get added to the roster, just email me (nmcgrath @ world.std.com). And now, back to our regularly scheduled topic... From what I've heard, bugging RCA = wasted effort. I wrote to the promotional director at RCA after Guaranteed came out, offering to run an American side of the fan club for no pay, and got no answer. I included an informal but educated analysis of what kinds of people like Level 42 (based on my college years -- a surprising percentage of people (I'd estimate 35%) at the small school I went to were LevelHeads), along with a resume of my marketing experience. No response. Three written followups, two phone followups, nada, butkus. No response. Seems to me like RCA = No response. Ask the boys in the band if they agree. :D Pat ------------------------------ From: lazlo @ Rt66.com (Lazlo Nibble) Date: Fri, 9 Jun 1995 21:21:15 -0600 (MDT) Subject: rca = no response I've sure L42 would agree; I *know* Pop Will Eat Itself do (I interviewed 'em last year). They were signed by RCA with a big flourish and the label promptly refused to do any serious promotion, released their albums six to nine months later in the US than the UK (sound familiar yet), and then dropped them when their material didn't sell well enough!
