Status: Single "Race": Caucasian (or was it Indy 500?) Occupation: Senior at Oberlin Conservatory Fan since: Something About You Favorite Song: Seven Years Favorite Album: Guaranteed Favorite Video: Lessons in Love First off, the local record store came through with my copy of FN. Wow. What a great combination of the funk they had going in the mid-eighties and the maturity a la Guaranteed. The brasses are TIGHT! Wow! It's still growing on me, but don't you folks think the tunes are much more danceable? Even though both are a long shot, I think that you'd be much more likely to hear All Over You than Something About You in your local club. Also, Back a while there was a thread about TGI Friday's and a general boycott over how they cut off Children Say (I think) for another song. Anyway, they have redeemed themselves!! I heard ALL of Lessons in Love on my last trip to the local TIGF's. Hmmm... Maybe whoever makes up the canned music for the whole chain likes Level 42... One way to spread FN might be to contact the makers of canned tapes like that and plug the album. This might be a bit tricky to do, but the songs would get played all over the place to lots of different people. Take care folks, -me. ---------------------------------------------------------OCVAXA- Everett Doner Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, Oberlin College sed7756 @ ocaxp0.cc.oberlin.edu sed7756 @ ocvaxa.cc.oberlin.edu http://132.162.200.22/consultants/Everett/Everett.html PGP 2.2 Public Key via Email ----------------------------------------------------------------- Consultant and Tech Writer, Houck Computing Center, Oberlin College ------------------------------ From: lolita @ InterServ.Com Date: Thu, 8 Jun 95 11:49:49 PDT Subject: Funky Stuff LevelHeads: Pat listed some old school funk yesterday. I have some more stuff to add. How about: You Haven't Done Nothin'; Jesus Children of America - Stevie Wonder Got to Give it Up - Marvin Gaye The Hustler - The Crusaders Fight the Power; Lay Away - The Isley Brothers Sun Goddess - Earth, Wind & Fire with Ramsey Lewis Summer Madness - Kool & the Gang (_before_ Celebration!) Fantastic Voyage - Lakeside (fantastic bass playing on that one) Speaking of funky, I just received a copy of The White Funky, and I had never heard Sandstorm before (I don't own The Early Tapes yet). That song is slammin'! I must have played it 10 times in a row. It is nice to rediscover some old Level stuff, because the old jazzfunk instrumentals are what I like most about them (my favorite Level 42 song is 43). Anyone who doesn't have either The White Funky or The Early Tapes should get one of those two releases for Sandstorm alone. The White Funky also has the best live version of The Sun Goes Down that I have heard yet; the breakdown in the middle puts the F in funky. (You know, just like the AA introductions) Seriously, it's great to know there's a bunch of people out there that think Level 42 is the best! I've been playing bass guitar for 15+ years now and Mark King has to be the best I've heard. Anyway you know all that. I first heard of them when "Something about you" hit the charts...what about nine years ago? My friend bought the album and he played it for me. I was in the army at the time and in Korea so he had the import version. It had 3 songs on it that aren't on any American version. (This really bugged me later when I bought my own copy back in the states). I thought it was great, especially being a bass player. I needed something more besides Geddy lee and Sting. Oh, I should throw Paul Mccartney in there too! Oopps! I'm excited about the list. It's weird because I just sent a letter to their fan club in England last week. What a month! I live in Gray, Maine just outside Portland. Please write if you like. Maybe we can jam. rolfiev @ aol.com ------------------------------ From: krys @ jokzaffa.demon.co.uk Date: Thu, 8 Jun 95 22:05:28 PDT Subject: It's a Small World Yo Levelheads, This is my first posting since subscribing to the list a few weeks ago, and was mortified to see that I was responsible for a "Waiting Mail" message in #405. I suppose I should introduce myself and give some demographics :- My name's Chris, was born in 1968 (making me 26 years old) in Balham, London. Now live in East Sussex, England near Tunbridge Wells. Married with an 8 month old girl. My day job is an Oracle DBA with a bit of programming now and then. I play bass (not currently in a band) and have a keyboard at home which I am trying to bash some music out on. Learned the bass mainly through listening to records and sussing out the basslines on them. Consequently my influences have been Mark King, Geddy Lee (Rush), Pino Palladino (Paul Young), Mick Karn (Japan) and the bass player Gary Numan used a lot who's name I can never remember (anyone?). First got seriously into 42 in 1986 when I was on holiday in Zakynthos and they played A Physical Presence from World Machine at one of the bars there. When I came back from the holiday I bought the album. The cassette is a bit knackered now so I should try to get it on CD. Their best album for me is Staring at the Sun, with Take a Look, Staring at the Sun, and Man being among my favourite 42 tracks - it's a cracking album. I agree with the people who have said Guaranteed was a bit dodgy on the "hanging together" front, I skip over several tracks on that album. Have managed to see them live on 3 occassions, first at Wembley Arena when Staring at the Sun had just come out ( I am sure Mark sang "if you won't show your t*ts to me" in Love Games, was anyone else there?). The second time was one of the 15 nights they did at Hammersmith Odeon, where they played Man and it was epic. The last time I saw them was at Guildford Civic Hall, I think that was on the Guaranteed tour. Other fave bands - Rush, Tears for Fears, Go West, Talk Talk, Scritti Politi, Was Not Was, Love and Money. Hopelessly stuck in the Eighties and hate what's on the Radio. Recently bought Return of the Space Cowboy by Jamiroquai - hmmmmm. Is the first one better? Anyway, the reason the topic of this message was about it being a small world is for two reasons :- 1. Is that you Huw? It's cjbarker @ cix here (bought 10 copies of WinGrep recently). What a small world. 2. > From: guterl @ geb.u-strasbg.fr (JAcques stagiare 06/95) > now, to all, what do you think about Keziah jones ? I played a gig at the Rockgarden in Covent Garden once, and a guy called Keziah Jones was on the same bill - can it possibly be the same bloke?? It was in about 1988-ish. The world just gets smaller and smaller. BTW, we weren't asked back to the Rockgarden due to the fact our keyboard player produced a backing singer from a cardboard box and proceeded to inflate her for the last song. Didn't go down well with management, but the crowd loved it. I should stop now, thanks for letting me on the list. As Afua mentioned before, they're only on paper (not digital). I was thinking that I could type 'em in, and we could post 'em to the Website ... in fact, I've done quite a bit of HTML work, so I could create the necessary webpages myself. This way, anyone else who wants 'em can get 'em quick 'n' easy! -----????-----> Question is, who's maintaining the website? Whoever ya is, please e-mail me so I can chat with you about this. I'd like to take on a project of creating a series of HTML pages to include ALL the lyrics we can get together.... another addition to our already WICKED L42 homepage! Daniel -- thanks for the concert tapes! They arrived in the mail today. Sadly, I have to get 'em converted to NTSC before I can watch 'em (sob, sniff). Later! Jer =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= !
