Learn to Say No Learn to Say No ------------------------------ From: "Zaron Michael Frumin" Date: Tue, 6 Jun 1995 07:58:05 -0400 (EDT) Subject: WE CAN HAVE INFLUENCE! My Level-headed Friends, I begin by asking each & every one of you to please consider something Kim said recently: She asked if it might be possible that RCA would decide to release _FN_ in the US. Kim also made another salient comment: She said she was "sickened" by the thought that some of the album's great songs would never even have the chance to become hits on U.S. radio stations. Well, my friends, it doesn't appear that radio stations will be giving "Love In A Peaceful World" (by the way, Kim, there IS a radio edit) or "Romance" an on-air chance anytime soon. It also doesn't look like RCA believes there's a market segment large enough in the U.S. to warrant the money, time and energy it would take to release _FN_. So, as long as this is the case, I'm afraid America will never know Level 42's final album. GO BACK AND READ THAT LAST SENTENCE AGAIN, FELLOW LEVELHEADS! . . . May I suggest that THIS NEED NOT BE THE CASE!!! Now I ask you to read this next part very attentively: There is NO GOOD REASON for RCA to doubt there is a market for _Forever Now_. Follow me on this one, Friends: About 2 months ago, I asked each of you to share your demographic info with all of us. You'll recall, I also asked each of you whether you were pleased or displeased with American Top 40 radio these days, as compared to, say, 5 or 10 years ago. I want to say, "thanks" to all of you who replied (and to those of you who didn't, it's not too late!). I have kept EACH AND EVERY ONE of your responses saved in a special folder here in my account; you see, I was hoping to prove a theory of mine--that Level 42's art is enjoyed by men and women of diverse backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, interests, occupations, and the like. So far, all of your responses have helped me confirm this belief. Also, many of you have acknowledged that the VERY SAME RADIO STATIONS that played "Lessons In Love" just 8 years ago JUST DON'T SATISFY YOU ANYMORE--and you've confirmed that this dissatisfaction stems from more than just the fact that they aren't playing Level 42 these days! Many of you have told me that you think these radio stations no longer offer the diverse styles of music they once did--WHICH IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE REASONS YOU WON'T HEAR THEM PLAY LEVEL 42 ANYTIME SOON!!! So let me sum all this up. I ASK EACH OF YOU: Wouldn't you say that the 160 or so of us are representative of something much larger? Don't you think that the fact that we are STUDENTS, PROFESSIONALS, ENGINEERS, MUSICIANS, COMPUTER SCIENTISTS, GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES, EDUCATORS; that we are from ENGLAND, AMERICA, ITALY, FRANCE, GERMANY, THE NETHERLANDS AND FROM SO MANY PARTS OF THE GLOBE; that we are BLACK, WHITE, HISPANIC, ORIENTAL; CHRISTIAN, JEWISH, AGNOSTIC; that we are HUSBANDS, WIVES, PARENTS; that we are TEENAGERS, 20-SOMETHINGS, 30-SOMETHINGS, 40-SOMETHINGS; and that we are SO DEVOTED TO OUR FAVOURITE ARTISTS that we are WILLING and READY to go to the EXTREMES of spending CONSIDERABLY MORE MONEY to IMPORT, not to mention the PRECIOUS TIME & ENERGY we spend to do so . . . (Bear with me, almost done) Doesn't this diversity, when coupled with the fact that SUCH A TINY PROPORTION OF PEOPLE ARE EVEN HOOKED UP TO THE INTERNET in the first place--which further suggests how amazing it is that we have managed to assemble such a DIVERSE group of Level 42 fans even given our small numbers-- (are you ready for the punchline?) DOESN'T ALL THIS IMPLY THAT THERE ARE FAR MORE PEOPLE OUT THERE LIKE US?--PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS DIGEST--OR MAYBE DON'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT LEVEL 42 but WOULD LIKE THEM IF THEY HEARD THEM!!! So you see, the hardest part of the job has been completed!! We've already got the proof that there IS INDEED a healthy market for the release of _Forever Now_ in the U.S.--a market VASTLY LARGER THAN 160 consumers! So, are we just going to sit back and WISH something would happen? Or will we find a way to make ourselves heard and MAKE IT HAPPEN? I invite each of you to brainstorm and comment on how we can take our COLLECTIVE INFLUENCE and figure out a way to share our BEST-KEPT SECRET of a band with the rest of America!!! Heck, in doing so, wouldn't we be doing Mark, Mike, Wally and the rest of the boys the favour of a lifetime? THERE'S HISTORY TO BE MADE HERE! . . . Thanks for your attention, Zaron fruminza @ student.msu.edu ------------------------------ From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Tue, 6 Jun 1995 05:09:21 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Forever Now Bonus Tracks No, I don't have an answer for that question, but I do have a possible clarification. The thing they have listed on CDEurope is a rerelease of the album, not a CDSingle with three bonus tracks. I don't know if that's what Lazlo was suggesting or not. By the way, no Dizrhythmia CDs there or on any of the other online services I know of. Yeah, I know I said I was going to be gone. I'm leaving tomorrow. I was just "talked" by a young woman in Australia whom I'd never met, and that kept me up until the new digest came out! It was worth being up for. Glad to see there's another young philosopher in our midst who is a 42head. I too saw Rockapella today on Carmen Sandiego. I've heard you guys before on there, but I never knew to make the association. Good stuff. This comes from a position of complete ignorance, but I would think that someone's gotta be willing to give you guys more of a chance than Carmen (though it's a good break). You're very talented, and every few years or so we seem to get some a capella breakthrough (the Nylons, or --gasp--Huey Lewis & the News). Do you have any CDs out? If so, where would I be likely to find them? God, here's a frightening thought: Level 42 puts down the instruments and does an a capella version of Love in a Peaceful World or Something About You. ------------------------------ From: lolita @ InterServ.Com Date: Tue, 6 Jun 95 05:28:55 PDT Subject: International World Machine Quick Note to Lazlo: "International" World Machine is still in print because I just got it a month ago. I ordered it from Audiophile, and they told me at the time that they had a number of copies, so if anyone needs it, that's where they should go. It wasn't cheap, though. ------------------------------ From: "Ms. Preston" Organization: New York University Libraries Date: 6 Jun 95 10:07:29 EST Subject: Forever Now Lyrics Last call for Forvever Now Lyrics if you want them! I'm still confused, though... isn't there a For'vr Now CD that's has extra tracks, (which I think include _Past Lives_, _Play Me_, & _Learn to Say No_)? I think this is the "Japanese release" everyone keeps talking about. Does anyone have any light to shed on this? P.S. I got accepted to Medical School yesterday!!!!!!! I think this is the "Japanese release" everyone > keeps talking about. Sorry, I thought you were talking about the singles! There's a Japanese version of the Forever Now album that has two bonus tracks ("Learn To Say No" and "Past Lives"). The three-bonus-track version is almost certainly the new reissue on Voiceprint, which is also supposed to have a new cover. Dunno what the tracks are yet -- be the first to buy it and let us all know! :-) -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ rt66.com - http://www.rt66.com/lazlo) ::: Search Nibble's Discographies! http://www.rt66.com/lazlo/DiscogSearch.html
