Mark King has a little guitar playing ability too. When he decides that he needs a certain sound here or there, he's just as apt to do it himself after the fact. Some of it may be programmed, but Mark's been known to contribute behind the scenes without taking credit for it. For example, Mark did the guitar solo in the remixed version of Children Say, and played the Duane Eddy jangling guitar (this is Mike Lindup's description) on My Father's Shoes. Further, remember that Allan Holdsworth only played five tracks on Guaranteed. Dominic Miller was part of the mix too, but my guess is that there were a few tracks that Mark played on, and I would think some of that extends to Forever Now as well. ------------------------------ From: jacques @ geb.u-strasbg.fr (JAcques stagiare 06/95) Date: Mon, 29 May 1995 13:25:30 +0200 Subject: Demographics Again ... Hi All, OK, i'd like to introduce myself, so let's start: My name is Denis (lastname JACQUES) well i know it's not easy to know which one is the last or the first name :) I'm 22 years old, studying computer science in Strasbourg, and well, Denis is a male name :), i'm single and one of my hobbies is : to play keyboard (more of synthesizer stuffs than mike's) i'd like to play bass but i was always as good as my feet with playing guitars :) well, i guess you won't know all about me in one mail :) that's too short. I discovered Level42 with "Running in the family" and "lessons in love" In 87 (or 86 ?? ) i saw them play "lessons in love" at a show, and there was also Berlin "take my breath away" .... i liked this song (i always do...) and the public had to choose a winner between these 2 bands. Level42 wan ! but i prefered Berlin :) well, anyway after that i heard several times "running in the family" on the radio and i decided to try the RITF album. after that a friend of mine made me a copy of "world machine" and i bought "staring at the sun" i didn't know at this time, about the Pre- "world machine" stuffs... so one day i went to a big music shop and i saw all (yes all !!) the albums made before WM and i bought them. I always listened to many different kinds of music, from classics to hard rock and jazz-rock, funk , pop, acid jazz, progressive rock... and it's hard to tell you what exactly i'm listening (i wouldn't flood you :) but there are a few names.... Level42 (ohhh !), Marillion, Sade, A-ha, Queen, Bon jovi, Bangles, ... and so on my prefered level album is "world machine", i find that there's some atmosphere on it that isn't on the others... prefered song: ?? ohh i think i can't choose so easily :) but i can say that if for one live they didn't choose to play the "chinese way" i wouldn't be angry against them... you know they are playing it each time !! and i'm one frustated guy who haven't see them during tour ! snniiifff ! Denis. ------------------------------ From: huwmill @ cix.compulink.co.uk (Huw Millington) Date: Mon, 29 May 95 19:37 BST-1 Subject: Re: Brit Awards, etc. Pat - > "Don't Look Any Further," a great tune the obscure British band The > Kane Gang did a few years back). But done first in 1984 by Dennis Edwards on that obscure Americal label 'Motown' I believe :-) Huw ------------------------------ From: rpowell @ mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu (Randall Powell) Date: Mon, 29 May 1995 13:54:37 -0500 Subject: Brit Awards '95 Sorry for the tangential nature of this request, but does anyone know the name of the act that closed the televised Brit Awards this year? I wasn't paying attention when they were introduced but really liked the song. There were four or five guys sitting on stools, singing to accompaniment by string section. Real poppy and bordering on schmaltzy, but the lead singer was cool. The song was something like "I Want You Back Forever" perhaps. Maybe it was East 17 (Stay Another Day)? I've become obsessed with finding out who they were. Please write me privately if you wish. Thanks. Randall Randall R. Thus, my brilliant skills in trend analysis provide me with the following insight: 20.42% of us are 'netxtroverts, the rest are not. ;-) Whew, I think I need a pint after that brain strainer! Keep that demographic data coming, so I can provide us all with yet more trivia. ...Alex... Let me introduce myself fully! My name is David Cavalleri, I am 22 years old and work as a librarian in Orlando, Fl. I have listened to Level 42 since World Machine and have been a fan ever since. I was very disappointed that Forever Now was not released here, because I thought it was one of their best releases to date! I'm not sure I have a favorite L42 track, because their songs fit in at different moods. I do hope they sign on with someone here in the U.S. and tour, because I've yet to see them on tour. I also subscribe to the Tears for Fears group. Level 42 have never won a Brit but were nominated for best group and album (RITF) for 87 at the 88 awards. The Brits are pretty crap to be honest as the industry votes depending on record company so obviously the companies vote for their own acts. The band did perform at the 87 ceremony where they mimed to Lessons In Love. ------------------------------ From: Michael BROOKS Organization: Technology Date: Tue, 30 May 1995 10:08:43 GMT Subject: Re: Level 42 Digest, #405 Having read a few interviews it would seem that Mr King is responsible for a vast amount of the guitar work on Forever Now and he also did a fair bit on Guaranteed as well, particularly funky, picking stuff.
