Whilst we're talking about B-sides, I'd have to rank the above song as a real good 'un. Gorgeous bass/keyboard-horns riff, and crisp drumming. `Can't Walk You Home' is indeed a fine track too! There y'go, another British type swaggering about `Can't Walk You Home.' TTFNB Ben -- Ben Poole University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. ------------------------------ From: eric (Eric J. Hansen) Date: Thu, 25 May 95 11:03:25 EDT Subject: THIS JUST IN: L42 List info... Hey folks, so this is the scoup as it now stands: I'm buying a PC and setting up Linux so that I can run *my own* host. I'll be getting a 28.8k PPP drop, and will continue to run the L42 list directly from my apartment in "Boston's historic Back Bay." Further, once things are set up and stable, I _will_ be starting several other lists - most notably, "Go West" and "Talk Talk". I'm also toying with a "Steve Winwood/Traffic" list, but I think it would generate too much traffic (no pun intended). I'm open to suggestions, but I want to keep the overall system load/mail traffic manageable at first. For you techies: the PC I've chosen is a Pentium 90mhz, which will totally crank. Since I'll be setting up Linux (a free Intel-based version of the Unix OS), I'm looking for others with expertise in this area. Anyone have it? Specifically, I'm wondering if my soon-to-arrive Diamond Stealth 64 video card will work with Xfree86 (the free X server package that most Linux users run). As for other L42 services, I'll also have a large space on another host dedicated to Web pages, but unfortunately will *not* have the entire L42 digest archive available via anonymous ftp (as it is now). Note that (Vince), this will entail changes to other links that currently exist on the L42 Home Page and who knows where else on the Web. At the least, I'll probably make 6 months or so of digests available to browse via my own Web pages (and I'll keep _all_ archives on my own host so that I can email them to whomever really wants them). The ETA to this whole "thing" is 4 to 6 weeks, so things won't be happening immediately. There are two things to be aware of: 1) The list addresses will be changing - they'll be "level42@.tiac.net", where is some name that I haven't decided on yet [see CONTEST message below!]. 2) There may be [gasp!] a few weeks of list downtime if this enterprise account gets pulled before I get the new machine set up and on-line. Rest assured that you'll all be informed of this both before and [duh] after the fact. 3) I'll be setting up one of the "available" list servers, most likely the "majordomo" one. This will make the list cleaner and easier to deal with. 4) For the five or so "bounce mode" subscribers, I won't initially be supporting this (due to the fact that my host won't be connected all the time). As the name implies, "Level 42 DIGEST" will continue in its new life as a straight *digest* list. Oh well - that's about it for now. Email me directly with any questions and/or concerns! Seeya... Okay, as if you people aren't sick to death of me already, and at the risk of being redundant, I shall submit, for your approval, my own personal demographics. Enjoy! Name: Amanda Katherine Paulette DOB: November 2, 1973, which makes me a lushy 21 year-old Place of Birth: RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk, England [God Save the Queen] Sex: XX-chromosome bipedal Homo sapien Race: Hopelessly white Marital Status: Hopelessly single Occupation/education: Okay, this is where it gets fun. No summer job right now, so I might have to go home to York County, VA to live with my Mormon family [I'm the only one who's not]. The job search here in Blacksburg is turning up nil because the biggest employer in the town [Virginia Tech, duh...] won't even consider me for menial, minimum-wage dining hall work because I graduated two weeks ago [B.A. in Communication, public relations concentration, cum laude, going to Clemson U. in August for grad school...seemed like a good idea at the time] and our illustrious governor wants to build more prisons than spend $$$ on higher education, so a hiring freeze is in effect and I've been turned away from _applying_ for 3 potential summer crap jobs because I have a diploma. So looks like I can spend yet another summer slaving at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg [never been? Think...the ninth circle of Hell]. Good thing I'm not bitter or anything ;) First 42 exposure: "Living it Up" on the school bus in 5th grade in England [didn't know it was them]; _really_ fell in love with [at the risk of being original] "Something About You" in October of '85 [this would be 7th grade] Fave Album: Damn. I'd have to say..."Running in the Family". I bought it at the airport just before we boarded the plane to leave England in '87. It was my first 42 purchase [...and a girl always remembers her first : ) ] Video and Song: "Something About You" across the board. Miscellaneous: Saw Level 42 once [like Randall] opening for Tina Turner...a couple weeks ago K92 out of Roanoke played M's "Pop Music" followed by "Something About You" on an all-request show [guess who requested 42...]; weird...while vacationing in Key West last week [it was a nightmare; don't even ask], I made a spectacle of myself at the Two Friends Restaurant by singing along to "Freedom Someday", which was playing on their music system Anyway, that's about it...in case I leave Blacksburg this weekend and anyone's feeling festive, my snail-mail for the summer would be: 2604 Big Bethel Rd. [don't laugh; I _wish_ I was making that up] Yorktown VA 23693 [Mainly, I might need to negotiate with folks about tapes because I have learned in my time on the list that I am seriously _lacking_ in the music department...any help would be appreciated] So I think I've covered everything. If this is my farewell, then I'll just say HOPEFULLY I'll see y'all in August. Adios! -Amanda P.S. Dirk-- Thanks for taking such good care of our Rico. I hope he wasn't _too_ much of a burden : ) Amanda K. Pat ------------------------------ From: nstn2887 @ fox.nstn.ca (john parks) Date: Thu, 25 May 1995 21:59:07 -0300 Subject: Here's our next contestant... Hello fellow Levelheads ! My name is Ryan Churcher. I've been quietly observing the digest's activity for months now, without ever contributing. Before I continue, here's my demographic info: I'm a "bi-racial," though completely HUMAN male. To specify my heritage, for the sake of statistics: my mother is about 1/3 Native North American, and 2/3 Black; my father's make-up is all White. I'm 19 ( I'll turn _20_ on June 13, Louis B.!) and live in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, Canada. In September I'll continue my BA programme at Acadia University in Wolfville, majoring in Art. My ambition (passion, actually) is filmmaking, which I plan to study after I finish my degree at Acadia next spring. I'm searching for a summer job now. My free time let's me get my portfolio together, with my palmcorder in hand and a twinkle in my eye. I use my other spare time to twiddle around with my keyboard, programming sounds when I should spend more time sharpening my manual skills. :) Anyway, I first heard Level 42 around the summer/fall of '85, while living in Toronto. "Something About You" was my introduction to the group's excellence. It was one of my favorite songs that year, and still floats around the top of my list. Later, I heard "Running in the Family," "Lessons in Love," and another of my all-time faves, "It's Over." The songs were played often, and I took hearing the group on the radio for granted. Now I live in a relative vacuum. The only newer song I've heard on the air since is "Guaranteed," which a local station still plays frequently. My other exposure is provided by my occasional fix of my _Level Best_ CD and my _Staring at the Sun_ cassette tape. The only other Level album I've heard is _Guaranteed_. I agree with the apparent concensus that _Guaranteed_ had some good tracks, but was disjointed. "Overtime" stands out (love those "ooh"s !), and "The Ape" does, too ( look of disgust). _Level Best_ had a beautiful cover, but I skip a third of the tracks. I can take "Hot Water" only because of the smart lyrics (as with most Level songs) and Mark's persistent bass. "Tracie" could stay in the shadows. "Heaven in my Hands" doesn't move me. "The Chinese Way" and "The Chant Has Begun" just don't cut it, either. (I prefer "The Chinese Way" all of the other 'baddies' I've listed...sorry Pat, but thanks for the _World Machine_ lyrics !) _Staring at the Sun_ is far better than the lukewarm credit people give it. I thought it was an intelligent piece of introspect, although the lyric naivite of "I Don't know Why" is an anomaly. "Man" and "Staring at the Sun" (LOVE that intro. ) were smartly in succession; they really compliment each other. Finally, "Gresham Blues" is a gem. I'm sorry for the length of this message, I just needed to clean my thoughts out to people who appreciate one of the finer things in life. Bye for now. ------------------------------ From: eric (Eric J. Hansen) Date: Thu, 25 May 95 23:50:20 EDT Subject: CONTEST! Give me a new hostname... Heya - regarding the above message about my new Unix host, I am soliciting the list for any ideas for a new hostname. I haven't yet determined whether or not the address will be ".tiac.net" or simply ".com", but either way, I'd like to think of something simple, easy to remember and most importantly, cool (i.e., not "lame-o.com"). So, here's the CONTEST! Come up with some cool suggestions, email them to me, and if I end up using one of them, you'll get a special prize! (I haven't thought of the prize either, so you might as well suggest that, too!) The name should be clever but general in nature (i.e., not "l42rules" or "liab" - ehem). A good example of an actual address that I like is "igotan @ ombomb..." Please send any responses directly to me and not the list (unless they're really, really zany!) "I thank you..." (quote from ZZ Top, not L42) -Eric p.s. Sorry for posting such a total "L42-irrelevant" message...
