I have a copy of both concerts shown on WDR. Mike has the most recent one at present, but when he has finished with it, you are welcome to a copy. I agree with your sentiments regarding the list. Without it, I doubt I would have ever known they were touring last year, and would have missed seeing them in Bristol. The first thing I do when I return home from work is retrieve the list. Elson: A belated thanks for recommending The Solsonic's Jazz in the Present Tense to the list a few months back. I ordered a copy after reading your comments and definitely recommend it to all. Could you post the joining address for the Acid Jazz list? Demographics time: I'm a 25 year old single white male living in Warminster, Wiltshire UK. After leaving college, I spent a short time building, installing and servicing closed circuit TV equipment, before joining my present employer. I now manage the computer department of a credit management consultancy company that specializes in debt collection, credit checking, tracing, legal services and training. Musically: I listen mostly to 80's music, although I am now beginning to 'discover' acid jazz. Best wishes to all, Daniel Lloyd ------------------------------ From: Crazylips @ aol.com Date: Sun, 21 May 1995 14:45:32 -0400 Subject: Re:I only have eyes 4u Kim Ivey asked if the duet she heard of the song "I Only Have Eyes For You" was Go West's singer. It is indeed Peter Cox, and the song is on the soundtrack to the film "Corinna Corinna" (sp?), starring Whoopi Goldberg.. -Jeff ------------------------------ From: eric (Eric J. Hansen) Date: Sun, 21 May 95 23:23:00 EDT Subject: A brief bio, the list, etc... Heya... well I'm totally stoked since I just returned to Boston from a weekend of rockin' inline skating in Washington D.C. And at that, I figure this is an opportune time to give a brief bio of myself. I'm a 24-year old male living in Boston's "historic" Back Bay. I grew up in Lexington, MA (the "Birthplace of America"), but then attended the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. I graduated from there in 1992 with a degree in Cognitive Science and Psychology. I am currently working as a software developer (Unix/AIX C) at a small software firm in Burlington, MA. As far as musicianship is concerned, I played sax and clarinet for about 9 years (up through my senior year in high school, but I haven't picked them up since :-(). I've also played keyboards for 8 years now. My original synth was an Oberheim OB8, but I now have a Korg M1 and E-mu Proformance+ piano module. I have never really been in any rock bands, but to a certain degree, I'd like to start a "garage funk band"... it's just a matter of how much free time I have. When I'm not listening to the boys and hacking with this list, I also get my thrills by inline skating (obviously), hiking, biking, working out, drinking microbrews (:-), talking on the phone and watching the toob. As many of you know, I'm very much into the 80's-sytle new wave bands, but thanks to this list (!) I'm now also into the acid jazz groove. (Thanks to Elson for "turning me on" to Incognito, for example!) For many years, I've also been jamming to the rock/funk fusion likes of Return to Forever, Mahavishnu, Billy Cobham, Sly&FS, Parliament, AWB, etc... The Acid Jazz scene for me is like a fresh perspective of the same rhythm-based grooves. As for the status of this list, (since Vince et. al have asked), it is still up in the air what will be the fate of the enterprise Unix box. I'm trying to come up with some alternatives since I would *really* like to keep the list up myself. As far as "plan B" is concerned, there is at least one member who may be able to offer services to keep the list going at another site. One way or another, the list _will_ survive -- it's just a matter of how (i.e., in what format), and possibly by whom (although I hope it's me!) One last thing - support for the list has been phenomenal and I'd like to thank everyone for their contributions. The list has evolved into a group with a much broader (and equally more interesting and stimulating) spectrum of discussion than simply just "Level 42". Hmmm... maybe this is something of philosphical worth... -Eric ------------------------------ From: Jim_McNeely @ chatter.com (Jim McNeely) Organization: The ChatterBox (817) 242-3088 Date: 22 May 1995 04:08:39 GMT Subject: Found Level 42 in London 9 years ago I was first introduces to level 42 when I was in a music group touring Austria and Poland back in 1986. The other keyboardist was from Wimbledon in London and after our little tour was over I stayed as his place for a few weeks, where he played "Pursuit of Accidents" for me. It was instant love at first hearing! Now I live in dls Dallas Texas, working as a children's entertainer and songwriter, and a magician. I am anxious to see what comes from this mailing list! ------------------------------ From: Mmuh @ aol.com Date: Mon, 22 May 1995 03:42:39 -0400 Subject: Country? There were two references to country music in the last digest, which leads me to this comment. Being a mobile DJ in the L.A. area, and having grown up on Rush, Styx, Toto, The Police, Zep, and Level 42, among others, I was never into country music at all. However, over the last year as country has become more popular, I have started listening to it, and have come across something very interesting: Some of today's brightest and most talented musicians are playing country music, and some of it is very impressive musically. Most country songs are simple, but to listen to some of the guitar and bass work that has been appearing has been enlightening. Besides "My Fathers Shoes" and "Don't Bother Me", can anyone think of any other country-tinged songs? Duh...Just wondering. By the way, any other addresses for mail-order places in the U.S. would be appreciated. Muchas gracias. ------------------------------ From: Michael BROOKS Organization: Technology Date: Mon, 22 May 1995 09:05:05 GMT Subject: Hi people, Hope everyone's OK......I haven't been on for a while what with projects and exams coming up. For the demography thing: my name's Mike Brooks, white male, 23 years of age, live in Kingston, England, I'm about to complete a BSc degree in Computer Information Systems, I'm a Londoner through and through, been into Level 42 since 1982, saw them 9 times live, I've been playing bass since 1987, ideally, I will turn professional following my graduation. Other like, Duran duran, Queen, prince, Acid Jazz, FREAKPOWER, Roachford, Dan Reed Network, James Brown, Bon Jovi... .the list could go on for hours! A little bit of publicity here.....during the Summer, I am going to be gigging with a 70's Glam Rock Covers band called the Sugar Plums. We are booked to do a load of Uni and college Summer balls in the UK, a week in Nice during July and possibly supporting the Quireboys at the Phoenix Festival. Anyone who wants to come along and say hello, please do so. You'll know I'm playing bass as I've got a salmon pink Kubicki Factor Bass. Demographics: I'm a 25 years old white male born and raised in Holland. In a few months I'll finish my computer science/economics study at the University of Amsterdam. L42-split: I heard Mike Lindup say in an interview there wasn't a balance in L42 anymore. He explained that musically everythong was OK, but because of disappointing sells of the album the balance was gone. Future releases: With the news that L42 split up the dutch media announced they gonna make a farewell live best of album. It's been a few months now and I never heard of it again. About solo-projects: Mark wrote in a letter to the fan club last year that he had enough material that didn't fit the Forever Now album and he could use for his solo-album. L42-cover: Recently I heard a cover of "it's over" by the sisters. The Sisters are a female vocal group in Holland. It is featured on their album "Discover it". I must say it is a good interpretation of this typical L42-ballad. New(?) compilation: The last couple of weeks I spotted a, I believe a german release, compilation album called : "To be with you again. There are no new songs on it and I don't believe there are remixes on it. I there anyone out there who listened to this cd? Regards, Ernst
