Religion in the 80's Shaggin' tunes AnimalLogic,Mike L, Etc... ------------------------------ From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Sat, 13 May 1995 11:35:45 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Forever Indie? Lazlo: where is that information that you found about Forever Now and Boon Gould's Tin Man? And do you have any ideas how we would go about ordering them? We could only hope that Time Will Heal would be one of those bonus tracks (probably just a pipe dream), but I'd really like to hear the new material from Boon. I have a song he did back in 1985 called "Head Full Of Shadows" off some various artists' UK release album entitled "It's A Live In World." It sounds a lot like Talking Heads, and he sounds a little like David Byrne. ------------------------------ From: PLFlanagan @ aol.com Date: Sat, 13 May 1995 15:28:31 -0400 Subject: Religion in the 80's (Great topic for a dissertation, eh?) I was out of town for the past week, so I'm just getting around to reading a few digests. So, if I cover some ground that's already been hit, I beg your everlasting forgiveness. Eric, wish I could help out, man, but, as you can tell from my email address, I'm not exactly in a position to moderate a daily list like this. :( Vince will do a good job, I'm sure, if you can't continue yourself. ;D Religion in Level 42 lyrics: In my opinion, taking "it's time to pray" and "I want to believe in you" as indications of a religious bent is off tack, because you're quoting out of context. True Believers, if you read through the lyrics, is actually a cynical look at, for lack of a better word, brainwashing in pseudo-religions. "Come with me, the teacher said, no side-to-side look straight ahead, 'cause if you want true confidence, you'd best forget your common sense" and "There was a time when we could make head nor tail of the story, now it's sublime and we're not afraid anymore, 'cause we're all true believers" about sum that song up. "Answers on the postcard please, I'd like to know what you believe" is reminiscent of the door-to-door pontificators. I don't take this song to be a slam on "real" religions, just a look at the lack of logic inherent in brainwashing. As for "It's time to pray" from Man, well, I take that just to be an emphasis to the character that the song speaks to that he's in dire straits (not the band, silly). Plus it just fits well. I haven't really found anything in their music to indicate that they're pro- or anti-religion. Of course, I can't speak for them, but I'm sure there proba bly isn't any particular reason for that, other than that wasn't the road they chose to take. Now that the philosophy lecture is over, let me congratulate Zaron on his show. I was on my college radio station (wee little Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN -- if you haven't heard of it, don't fret -- most people haven't, and if they have, they prefer to forget about it) for 2 years (85-86 and 86-87 -- great years for music) and it was spectacular fun. You asked for suggestions, so here are some from my collection. I was going to email them privately, but I thought the rest of everyone might get some jarring memories from reading this list (my apologies for the length). * means play the remix, brother! Take Care of Yourselves, Pat ------------------------------ From: PLFlanagan @ aol.com Date: Sat, 13 May 1995 15:28:36 -0400 Subject: Shaggin' tunes Oh yeah, I forgot... Pursuit of Accidents, 43, Hot Water, Fashion Fever. Foundation and Empire isn't bad, either, since it has some good tempo changes... Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of romantic slow songs to pick from, so I sort of stick with the ones that have a good beat. ;D Good shags to all, Pat ------------------------------ From: Dale Loyd Date: Sat, 13 May 1995 17:00:20 -0500 (CDT) Subject: AnimalLogic,Mike L, Etc... Hey to all. I've been out of school and away from the computer for a week. Am also in the process of moving from one house to another, so I'll poke in and out for a while. BobC -- I'm with ya, man! Animal Logic II (the one with the two polar bears on the front) is the recommended album. Tight playing, good production, some silly lyrics, but hey! Deborah Holland *looks* good! On Stewart: I'm a pretty big Stew fan and have all his solo stuff (save one, his current venture into a children's book on tape score: he did the music, and James Earl Jones (Darth Vader's voice) did the reading of "Noah's Ark". Strange, huh?). It's NOTHING funky about it, but it is agile listening material. His first was Klark Kent, back during the Police days, where he played all instruments and tried to sing (it's punk music, mostly). Sting and Andy S. actually played backup to Stew on a BBC performance or two as Klark Kent (another curve ball). Anywho, Stew, around 1983 writes his first classical piece for a production of "King Lear". He does "Rumblefish" and "The Rhythmitist" around 1985, the former a movie score and the latter bits and pieces of compositions he made while touring Africa (there was a video to this, also). His best, I believe, is "Equilizer and Other Cliffhangers" on IRS Records (his brother, Miles Copeland's, label). Great stuff. Heavy percussion. No lyrics. VERY energetic. It's bits and pieces of his scores to the EQUILIZER TV series with Edward Woodard and form scores for "Wall Street" and "She's having a Baby". Then comes Animal Logic, two albums, does some opera writing for the Seattle Symphony Orch ("Holy Blood and Crescent Moon"), Animal splits (Deborah Holland has a solo CD out now), and he's back to scoring and opera writing. Whew! Ditto on the Mike Lindup reissue with the extra track (#10) that the name doesn't appear on the album credits. You're not freaking out! I was in a local buy/sell/trade place here in Nashville the other day, and they had a copy of Mark King "Influences" I think for around $10 (used). The place's name is Phonolouxe. Don't have the # right off hand, but you can call (615) 555 - 1212 (Nashville information) and get it. Dunno if they would ship C.O.D. or not...but's it's a lead (either that, or I could get it and ship it....Email me if you need). Cheers to all. Dale (bowing three times daily towards Mike Lindup...)
