Mike's Changes RE: Marcus Miller animal logic & stewart copeland ------------------------------ From: "Louis Barfe's IbMePdErRoIoAmL" Date: Tue, 9 May 1995 12:41:48 +0100 (BST) Subject: Re: Level 42 Digest, #385 Right let's get this Changes stuff straight. It was originally released in the UK on Polydor on June 11th 1990. To promote the release, Mike did a small gig at Subterrania in London on the day of release, and one a couple of days later in Glasgow. I was at the London gig and it was a killer. Also at the London gig were Annie McCaig (on stage with ML), and getting beered in the audience, Phil Gould and Gary Husband, who spent a lot of the night chatting cordially. The religious references in the lyrics shouldn't be surprising. Mike's mum Nadia (also at the gig) released several albums of hymns and gospelly stuff in the 70s and had a TV series of that nature. The atheistic slant of LFT lyrics can be firmly attributed to Phil, I'd say. Hey, all! 1) Holdsworth's synthaxe -- what the hell is that!? I mean, I understand how midi instruments work, but I've just never seen anything like that before. Can someone explain to me the basics of it and why-in-the-world the strings appear to bend about 40 degrees from the neck to the body? 2) Re: religiosity of L42 lyrics. I, too, was surprised to hear so much spirituality in Mike's album. But then, I always thought the band did have some spiritual bend. The song "True Believers" I always took as a somewhat spiritual song -- the lyrics quoted yesterday ("...People there were so convinced, It's kept me thinking ever since...") are not enough of the song to make an evaluation. The rest of the song sez, "I want to believe like you.... Now I believe in you.... I'd like to know what you believe," and so on. Furthermore, in "Man" they sing, "It's time to pray." Comments? Suggestions? Quotes from other songs? Rob :-) ------------------------------ From: eric (Eric J. Hansen) Date: Tue, 9 May 95 17:46:18 EDT Subject: HELP! I need a home! Well folks, the inevitable has happened (or is about to happen)... The Level42 list will have to either be (a) moved, (b) shutdown temporarily, or (c) removed from cyberspace. This is due to the fact that the company which owns the enterprise machine (an outdated DECstation 3100 running Ultrix version **4.0** {this is _way_ old}) is planning on tossing it for a dedicated PC running Linux OS. Their needs have changed and they are moving to the new HW/SW platform because it will be easier to manage and more reliable. Unfortunately, this also means that there are going to be less resources for "peripheral software services" such as my Level42 list. Wahhhhhh!!! A bit of history for the interested/bored: I worked for the CCC - Center for Clinical Computing in Boston, MA- from June 1992 to October 1993. Among other responsibilities, I was the sysadmin for the enterprise machine, so I had free reign to play with lists and the like. Since leaving the CCC (of my own will, thank you...), I've been able to keep all of my previous accesses to the machine due to the "good will" of the new sysop. However, this responsibility is again about to change, and thus I have little/no say in how things progress. To reiterate on the options at hand for the survival of the Level42 list: (a) move it. If someone else out there is a system administrator or otherwise has the permissions necessary to set up and operate a list, then this is feasible. (b) shut it down temporarily until another solution can be found. One possibility is that, down the road aways, the new enterprise sysop will set up a majordomo list server on the new Linux box. At that point, it is a possibility to continue running the list. (c) (gulp) "mv /usr/Level42 /dev/null". The only other thing I'm considering is buying my own PC (I don't even own a computer!), setting up Linux and then getting a dedicated SLIP account with a net provider in the Boston area. This is, however, mucho dinaro. Frankly, though, it makes me ill just thinking about using a commercial net provider's machine where I *can't* play with everything (yes, I am a true Unix hacker! Get your hands off my kernal!) Please respond to me or the list with any ideas you have! I figure it will be a few weeks until "judgement day" [gee... maybe this is what Mike Lindup was talking about on Changes!]. A truly >outstanding aural confection... Actually, it's Lalah Hathaway, not Loletta. Marcus is preparing to do a mini tour of the US in the next few weeks, so for those of you stateside, keep your eyes open. The band's gonna be killin'! After watching this list for the last several weeks, and seeing so much positivity about Guaranteed, I went back and checked it out again. I've gotta say, there's a decided lack of groove on this album! Gary Husband is a capable drummer, but in this context, he's no match for the groove king (aka Phil Gould). ------------------------------ From: jacques @ geb.u-strasbg.fr (JAcques stagiare 06/95) Date: Wed, 10 May 1995 11:55:13 +0200 Subject: animal logic & stewart copeland Hi to everyone Dale, what to choose between the first (3 dogs) and the second album of animal Logic (3 polar bears) ? Dale told me that the second is funkier than the first, but although the first isn't so much funky, the melodies are nice, well "built" I think i must first find the second to be able to tell which is the best.. I also would like to ask everyone if someone tried a Stewart Copeland solo album? How does it sounds like ? And now another question to everyone: Can you tell me if Susanna Hoffs (ex bangles lead singer) made a second solo album ? may be if there's one it hasn't been released in France... hhmmmmm by the way, take care, it's not at all a funky kind of music :) i was just asking for my personnal tastes :) Denis.
