Subject: Level 42 Digest, #381 ===================== * LEVEL 42 DIGEST * ===================== Digest 381 Friday, 05/05/95 148 subscribers Today's messages: Lindup's Nationality/Heritage & More Favorite Video Re: Animal Logic Favorite Video\Afro ------------------------------ From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Thu, 4 May 1995 05:03:35 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Lindup's Nationality/Heritage & More Let's see if I can clear up the confusion on Mike's nationality. His mother, Nadia Cattouse was born in British Honduras (now Belize). She spent some time in Glasgow and London as part of her training as a teacher, during which time she met and married her first husband, a composer/arranger of musical scores named David Lindup. Mike was born St. Patrick's Day, 1959 in London. By the way, all this information comes courtesy of the book LEVEL 42: THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY, written by Michael Cowton, London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd. 1989. ISBN 0-283-99837-7 Allan Holdsworth: he's widely considered a fusion god. I personally have no experience of him outside of L42, and judging from his digest group most fans are musicians who can appreciate his technique. I've read him described as almost playing with a saxophone phrasing (I believe that's correct, but I'll have to check). He has around eight albums, half of which feature Gary Husband. He joined L42 most likely because of Gary & because he needed the paycheck, but it was Mark that asked him to join up (Gary didn't think he would go for it). ------------------------------ From: Kim Ivey Date: Thu, 4 May 1995 10:14:55 -0600 (MDT) Subject: Favorite Video I'm gonna try to throw in my two cents worth opinion of the boys' best video, considering I've seen so few of them. "Something About You" holds a special place in my heart, firstly because it was how I first saw and HEARD the group; secondly (as many of you other subscribers have already read), because Mark looks so friggin' good in the video ... even as the menacing clown ... but especially at the end. I also like Lessons in Love, mainly because of the background setting, and the vivid colors therin ... also the guys have on some pretty snazzy outfits ... and (please ... once again excuse my mushiness), Mark looks really good with that short-short hair cut. By the way, in later years when he started to let his hair grow out, was it because he was beginning to experience male-pattern baldness, or something? Oh ... and in Lessons in Love, I also get a kick out of looking at Boon during his guitar solo. Does he always appear that stoic and serious, or did they just direct him to look that way in the video? Another question: What's up with the video for "It's over". Why did they put that little country twang sound into such a smooth, albeit ... ice-cold and depressing ... slow-jam (meaning the version that was on Running in the Family)? And finally I agree with the comment on the "To be with you again" video, just what does a woman sleeping have to do with a miniature LEVEL 42?! Inquiring minds need to know.... There is some very memorable songwriting going on in this album, and I like the sound of Deborah Holland's voice mixed with Stanley and Stewart. The playing is a little rough around the edges but the album has enough appeal to merit its purchase, should anyone still be able to find it. Try it, and you probably will like it. -jeff ------------------------------ From: PLFlanagan @ aol.com Date: Thu, 4 May 1995 18:24:43 -0400 Subject: Favorite Video\Afro Hmmmm, that's a tough one. The Something About You/Leaving Me Now pair is a powerhouse (I especially like the imagery in LMN -- the clown taking off the makeup, Mark ripping the paper -- and you can't beat that roadster). Hot Water's great (I forgot all about spinning on your head until I saw this one). Take A Look should have been a hit song and video -- it's damn good. It's Over has great scenery. Children Say was just fantastic. But, I think I have to pick Take Care of Yourself. It's too much fun to not like, with the double edge of making you feel kind of depressed about Alan Murphy. (Oh, yeah, To Be With You Again's video is, ahhh, like a bad acid trip or something.) ---------------- Mike's Afro -- Yeah, he had one goin' on for awhile there. If you think the one in the "Level 42" liner notes is good, you should see a photo of him around two years before it. Woof, it was seriously blown out. Angela Davis with a mustache. :D TCOY, y'all.
