Eric, I would definitely join a Go West digest if it existed. ------------------------------ From: "Friesen, Alex" Date: Wed, 26 Apr 1995 09:01:15 -0500 Subject: Canine Counterpart Hi All, An old friend of mine had a large Bouvier canine type creature with some odd traits. If I held his front paws so he was, in effect, standing up, his head almost came up to mine. Yet for some reason he thought he was a lap dog - he would try to climb into your lap when you sat down. He also had interesting taste in music. Whenever we played Level 42 (a common occurrence, I might add) he would begin to howl. Not like a wolf at the moon sort of thing, but in an almost melodic way. It took us a while to realize that it was only Level 42 that started him singing, and then we began to experiment. We thought perhaps it was certain songs. Wrong. Certain speakers? Wrong. Certain albums? Wrong. Whether you played a Level 42 video through a great sound system, or a worn-out tape through a much abused ghetto-blaster, this dog would sing. Eventually we decided his singing was so good that we had to capture it for all time. As one person manned the sampler another chased the dog around the room with a microphone and a third sat at the top of the stairs with the tape player. We started playing Level 42 very quietly, so as not to pick it up on the sample, and sure enough the dog began to sing. It took a few trys, but we ended up with some great howls, one of which we turned into an organ-like sound which we subsequently used on a recording we did (never released). So what can I say? Level 42 is so good their music transcends the species barrier!! ...Alex... I first want to say that this is a very enjoyable forum and keep up all of the interesting messages. Pat Flanagan wrote about Level 42 opening for The Thompson Twins back in the late 80's. I too had tickets to one of those shows, down at The Piers in Manhattan, and when word got out that Level 42 wasn't going to be performing, half the people asked for their money back, didn't show up, or left once they got there and found out. That was the only show I ever had tickets to, so I never saw them. That will always bother me. Comment about Marcus Miller... For all of you new fans, he has an album coming out in late May that is supposed to be a slam dunk. It has everyone who is anyone on it, and I suggest anybody who remotely likes him run out and get it the day it is released. The White Funky?! I have never heard of this album. When did it come out, and what is on it? Also, what album is The Bends on? Is it a B-side? People keep saying that it is a great song; can I pay someone for a copy? I finally got Forever Now and Changes on Monday (Forever Now cost me 40 bucks!). Forever Now is the shit; anyone who said Guaranteed is better has lost their mind! My favourites (this digest has caused me to adopt some Brit spellings) are Forever Now (kick ass song!), Romance, The Sunbed Song (love that Turn It On reference), and Past Lives. Isn't the opening bassline to Past Lives from the intro to Love Games on Live At Wembley? Can someone verify this for me? The rest of the songs are good also. I know the CD is not going to leave my stack for a while. That's not Wembley Stadium, that's Wembley Arena (though, at L42's peak they could have probably filled Wembley Stadium for a single gig, or at least pretty close, since they did eight nights at Wembley arena, and I believe it seats between 15,000 to 20,000. Holdsworth: check the atavachron digest. I can provide the address if you like. Astley: I'm leery of being a snob about him, because some others would be snobbish about L42 appearing with them (Holdsworth, Clapton fans). It's funny how much fans make of this that the musicians themselves don't. My take on the two Astley tracks: underplayed bass line, I'm not a big fan of Astley's voice, and I hope Mark didn't write those lyrics. The music, is pretty good, and you can see Mark's hand in it. However, I don't think of either song as really being up to L42's standards. Just two cents worth. ------------------------------ From: akpaulet @ vt.edu (Amanda P.) Check again. It's my fave concert video. Mine too, but wasn't it Wembley _Arena_. It and the stadium are two different things, I believe. [Feel free to flame me if I'm wrong, but I've been to Wembley Arena before. I'd _love_ to check the tape, but apparently I forgot to bring it with me from home after Spring Break. *snfff*] Amanda K.
