I just located the Ultravox discography, and I noticed on the b-side of the single "Wastelands" appears a live cut of "The Chieftain/The Dancer," recorded December 23, 1985 at Wembley Arena. Any of you Brits know if Mark King perhaps sat in for the show? If not, I don't care what bassist Midge had playing with him, "The Chieftain" would have been a sad duplicate of the original. Mark is the only bassist who could do that part any justice because he's the only one who can play it the way he plays. Maybe it's no different than the multitudes of Hendrix covers or Jaco tributes, but it seems different to me somehow, like no one else could play it as frenetically as Mark can, and that's the whole substance of that song. It's not like Will Lee underplaying the bass line on "Something About You," at least not to me. Does anyone here have this B-side? I'd be curious to hear it. ------------------------------ From: PFlanagan1 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 25 Apr 1995 21:25:23 -0400 Subject: All Kinds Of Stuff German Satellite TV/Fantasist/etc. -- It would be really really cool if some charitable soul who has a satellite dish could tape any of this stuff that comes down the pipe, so that the unwashed unlucky masses who don't have a satellite dish (like me, for instance), could either borrow the tape and make a copy, or provide a tape for copying (shipping expenses paid, of course). Hint, hint. ----------------- x ----------------- Midge Ure -- Awhile back I mentioned Midge's third album, the name of which escaped me. It was called "Pure". ----------------- x ----------------- Dirk -- Which Prince's Trust concert had Lessons In Love? I only have the 10th Anniversary album (with Something About You) and the 1987 album, with the fantastic versions of Running In The Family (with Clapton on guitar) and If I Was (Midge Ure, with Mark on Bass). ----------------- x ----------------- Ernst-Jan -- THANKS for the lyrics!!! They helped decipher some of Mark's swallowed singing. Question -- you refer to a "Definitive Biography." What's that? Are you talking about the FAQ, or is there something else that I MUST HAVE? :D PS -- The Sunbed Song RULES! ----------------- x ---------------- Michael Brooks -- Isn't that John Thirkell on the cover of Guaranteed? It sure looks like him. (Never having seen Jakko, though, I could be wrong.) ----------------- x ---------------- Take Care Of Yourselves, everyone. Pat Flanagan "Just as long as he believes, standing in the light, he'll make them understand." ------------------------------ From: PFlanagan1 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 25 Apr 1995 21:28:33 -0400 Subject: Mea Culpa Yes, Jakko is a guitarist. Details? (I know this subject's probably been more than covered already, but hey, I'm still kinda new to the list and non-Unix non-Web, so I can't check the archives. Have pity on me.) ----------------- x ---------------- Disadvantage to going to a newsgroup -- those of us without true net access miss out on this great forum. As ruler of this universe, I command you, DON'T. :D ----------------- x ---------------- (Love that Blue Star Ointment commercial -- Thanks Gregman, whoever you are!) ----------------- x ---------------- Kansas City Milkman -- DEFINITELY about something more than just dairy products. Definitely. I go along with Alex's interpretation about narrow-mindedness. ----------------- x ---------------- Rick Astley -- At the risk of sticking my neck out to many sharpened axes, I like Rick Astley (all his stuff), and I particularly liked the King collaborations. Mark's a flexible writer, which I respect. I just wish he would have played on the two songs. ----------------- x ---------------- Bond, James -- I seem to remember hearing something about a Bond song, but I could be msrfings (damn, MISFIRING) again. I'll have to listen to The Bends a few times with that mindset, though, 'cause I didn't make that connection. See ya, Pat Flanagan "Wow, I was just saying the other day, I bet I'll never hear Level 42 and Victor Kiam mentioned in the same sentence. Hmph...." ------------------------------ From: Crazylips @ aol.com Date: Tue, 25 Apr 1995 22:58:06 -0400 Subject: Re: Wembley Michael Brooks recently uttered the unspeakable >One thing occurred to me the other day....L42 have never played at Wembley Stadium< -----Whooooooooops.
