I don't think so. Jakko M.Jakszyk is a highly talented guitarist. Which makes the fact that the only Level 42 records he's played on 'At This Great Distance' and 'As Years Go By' more than puzzling. Just two B-sides. However, he was the guitarist on both the 'Guaranteed' and 'Forever Now' tours. Danny Blume did not play live on either tour, or indeed ever, with Level 42; but only on the 'Forever Now' album. Gavin Harrison was the drummer on the final tour. I should know, I saw it start in Portsmouth and end (sob) at the RAH. And the RAH had no atmosphere from where I was sitting. The band's heart didn't seem to be in it. Just the standard set and off. No signs that this was the end. Very unemotional. Anyone who says it was a great gig, obviously didn't see the last night at Hammersmith Odeon in 1990. Now that was a last night to savour. ------------------------------ From: dcrowson @ amoco.com (David Crowson) Date: Mon, 24 Apr 95 15:33:26 BST Subject: Final tour line-up >From: PFlanagan1 @ aol.com >Jakko played drums on the final tour, after Gary Husband left. >Danny Blume - Guitar on Forever Now, and, I believe, the final tour. I don't imagine that Mark has anything more "in common" with him than does Midge. Then again, Mark's influences are wide and far, and no one thought the Allan Holdsworth/L42 connection would work. I'd hold A Kinder Eye and If You Were Mine up as some of their better work, period. I look forward to the possibilities.... Jakko: is a GUITAR player. Joined up after Holdsworth split. He never played on a L42 album, altho I believe he played on At This Great Distance (with a blinding guitar solo at the end) and As Years Go By. As Michael Brooks mentioned, he played on the last two tours and did promotionals with them. Staring at the Sun: NEVER HIT #1 in the UK. It opened at #2. L42 is one of the most commercially successful groups to never have a #1 on the singles or album charts in the UK. There's some statistic on this, but they spent like a combined 300+ weeks on the charts without a #1. Thanks a lot, U2 (who kept Running in the Family out of #1 with The Joshua Tree). Handsome Rugged Man: TREMENDOUS B-side. Should have made that album over half the songs (unlike some brits here, Pursuit is my least fave L42 album), and made my Farewell Concert set. ------------------------------ From: "Jody McDonnell, esq." Let me 'splain! The reason I called Carl Palmer Mr. No Concept of Time: I dare you to take a metronome to "Only Time Will Tell" for instance (Asia). Scary stuff. Not that that means he's a bad drummer. He was a pioneer - ELP wouldn't have been the same without him, and progressive rock wouldn't have been the same without ELP. But in this world of precision timing, older tracks with time fluctuations tend to stand out. Sure, Mark's stint as a milkman may well have influenced Kansas City Milkman. But "born in this place, you only see so far" must certainly mean something beyond the obvious. This song makes numerous references to living an isolated life, with the implication that people living in that sort of microcosm are narrow-minded. "If we put the truth in your hands would you really like to know?" "Too much talking", "disinformation...we have to take for the truth". This aint no song about delivering milk. What do you think about Mr. King's help on the liberation album of the young Rick Astley? IMO I love those songs (in the world of RA, not 42, obviously), but I think a lot of you consider them as the worst thing that could have happened to Mark's carreer (I even remember a post on the slow old days of the list pleading for any kind of posts, even over this subject!) After someone mentioned the level42 newsgroup (a long while back), I subscribed to it on several hosts but never saw any traffic. I took this to mean that the group was only local or had a limited USENET distribution. Someone just wrote: > status...But if we did that, then I would feel bad for you, Eric, after Although this list is occasionally a pain (i.e., lots of rejected messages from hosts on Rhodesia), it is nonetheless rewarding. I would still love to see a newsgroup for L42, but doubt it will happen. If it di though, I suspect that I'd still be pretty active in it. Besides - that would "free up" my time to start the Talk Talk, Go West and [Zaron!] LIAB lists. -Eric ------------------------------ From: DigDog @ aol.com Date: Tue, 25 Apr 1995 01:51:31 -0400 Subject: carl palmer Must agree with whomever expressed dismay at the King/Palmer alliance. My own feelings of dread spring from Mr. Palmer's decided lack of feel. Put simply, he's about the stiffest drummer I've ever heard. All rudiments and technique flash with little respect for the kinds of grooves that King & Co. worked to death on songs like Hot Water and Sun Goes Down. Personally, I think watching them play together would be like watching James Brown try to show Al Gore the Mashed Potato... ------------------------------ From: John Edward Martin Shuford Date: Tue, 25 Apr 1995 00:27:34 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Fantasist, White Funky, James Bends While I write this note, I have the good fortune to be listening to The White Funky (thank you so much, BobC, for alerting me to its presence last year). I've had the disc for over a year now, and the show is 12 years old, but what a killer performance! Someone mentioned The Fantasist today (I think in response to my mentions of it in the past week). The story is this: L42 appear in a night club called The Coconut Grove (I think the story takes place in Dublin). They perform a lip-synched and overacted version of the US Remix of Love Games. They did not, however, write any music for the movie (or if the did, it did not make it to the final version of the film). The only other L42 Silver Screen appearance I know of is the use of Lessons in Love in the closing credits of the 1987 film Hot Pursuit (starring John Cusack). "The name is Bends. James Bends." Does anyone remember hearing word a couple of years ago that L42 was cutting a demo track for the upcoming James Bond film (which did not get made because they went through that huge hassle trying to get rid of Timothy Dalton and getting Pierce Brosnan). Anyway, L42 were in competition with Art of Noise for the deal. Now, my hunch is that The Bends is in some way indicative of the demo track they cut. Either it is the direct result, or they revamped it with the addition of Phil's lyrics. It has all the constituent elements of a Bond theme. The only thing that is missing is the collaboration with John Barry, but that would probably have come only if they had their demo accepted and the Bond film project was a go. As such, they easily could have reworked the demo track on their own and put it in this album's group of material (they were working on this Bond project post-Guaranteed). Finally, Wally Badarou's name pops up in a (slightly) unexpected place. I just picked up through BMG Talking Heads' greatest hits album (by the way--THIS is the way such a compilation should be done), and I noticed that Wally played synthesizer on Burning Down the House.
