Re: Level 42 Digest, #365 ------------------------------ From: lolita @ InterServ.Com Date: Thu, 20 Apr 95 06:10:41 PDT Subject: Starchild Thanks for the reprint of that article the other day. I will have to reread it a number of times to digest the whole thing. One subject they talked about was the difficulty of classifying their music (pop? soul? jazz funk?) Well, I would like to make a comment. The first Level 42 song I heard was not Something About You, it was Starchild back in 1981 when I was 14 years old. I am from the NY/NJ Metro area, and there is a black radio station called WBLS that was really into the Brit soul thing before it became popular (they played Loose Ends well before anyone else did) and they put Starchild into heavy rotation. It was funny because I had no idea at that time who the band was and thought the song was by a group of black Americans. I didn't figure it out until I went on my Level buying binge in 1986-7 and heard the song again. WBLS never played any other Level 42 songs after that, and it was a shame that the interest generated in the black community wasn't tapped at that time. There are a number of artists who got their start on black radio, Madonna being the most glaring example (her song Everybody was played on black radio for a full year before anyone else played it). The point is that they could have been huge well before World Machine, or even Standing in the Light. What a waste. ------------------------------ From: "Friesen, Alex" Date: Thu, 20 Apr 1995 09:22:07 -0500 Subject: Quality and Sad Songs >Finally, it kinda looks like this Midge Ure-Carl Palmer-Mark King >things is gonna happen Yuck. Mark King playing with Carl (Mr. no concept of time) Palmer? No thanks. (Of course, I'll run out an buy it anyway.) And speaking of CD sound quality, my copy of Standing In The Light has very low level output and distorts through my discman headphones. Does anybody else have this problem with this album? Pat, I agree with your tear-jerker list except for Last Chance. That tune, to me, fits into another category of song: Depressing Lyrics with Happy Music. Songs in this category include Something About You and Lessons in Love as well as Last Chance. If you play them as background music (a blaspheme in its own right) they sound fun. If you listen to the lyrics you realize that these little ditties all talk about how wretched life is. A wonderful combination, and just one more reason I love Level 42. ...Alex... I haven't heard Marcus' album, "The Sun Don't Lie", but I know that he produces and plays on some of David Sanborn's albums. Sanborn's latest couple of albums, "Hearsay", and "Upfront", are wicked! Marcus Miller plays some rippin' riffs on these albums, definitely worth a glance or two from you funkybassline fans out there! I also saw Sanborn live in Toronto last summer, and although the tix were really expensive ($66.00/person for balcony), the show was AAAAAMMAZING! To top it off, I got to sneak backstage and get an autograph. Genuinely a talented musician, AND a "nice guy"! So if you like '42 for some of their jazzier instrumentals, I'd check out Sanborn's stuff. You might just like it! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | Jeremy J. He has this dead-on serious look in some of the Staring at the Sun shots I've seen (both that made the album and that appeared in the fanclub newsletters). Also, what about the looks that ol' Clowny Clown Clown was giving everyone (albeit with jealousy rather than menace) in Something About You. Finally, in the film The Fantasist (where the boys are playing Love Games in a Dublin--I think--night club), Mark has a very fierce look on his face, even more so than he did in the Chant video. I'm imputing a bit from the similarities I see in Mark's looks and personna to that I see in Rutger Hauer and others I mentioned last week, but I definitely think Mark has what it takes to play a wonderful bad guy in film. Political Lyrics: Define political for me. I could make a case for all kinds of songs counting as political (or socio-political). It just depends on if you are looking for them in story form, straight out, or with that neatly L42ish trick of sorta speaking around the issue in a thought provoking way. PS: Bob, thanks for that update on the PalmerUreKing project (PUK???). I've often wondered why Midge didn't join L42 or at least help them out over the years with some song/lyric writing. I guess this means that we'll never see that supposed King solo album? Or maybe Mark is going to do those tracks with these guys. ------------------------------ From: lazlo @ Rt66.com (Lazlo Nibble) Date: Thu, 20 Apr 1995 09:41:22 -0600 (MDT) Subject: International Version, World Machine And now for another patented moment of Nibble Pedantry: > Thanks for the info on the alternate version of this album! Strictly speaking, the "US-Version" with "Hot Water" and "The Chant Has Begun" (both originally on True Colours) is the alternate version -- the one with "Coup D'Etat" is the *real* version. -- Lazlo (lazlo @ rt66.com) ------------------------------ From: Kim Ivey Date: Thu, 20 Apr 1995 10:25:12 -0600 (MDT) Subject: Re: Level 42 Digest, #366 Just a comment about M'Shell N'de Cello (since I don't have the cassette cover in front of me this is the best I can do, also). I had a feeling Mark was one of her influences. In terms of her playing. I think she's pretty good myself (but then again, I;m not a musician, so my opinion doesn't count for so much). Plantation Lullaby is a groovin' album. It has a pshychadelic, funk, motown, Marvin Gaye quality to it. M'shell is a happenin'addition to the music world, and I can't wait for her next album. (Madonna apparently discovered her, so I guess the blond ho' has got something going for her, in terms of her music taste. I believe she also hand picked Level to open up her concert tour back in 1987, right?) At first I thought that this was the same guy that played drums on Electronic (and also with The The), but that's David Palmer... As to why Ure never "joined" Level 42: realize that he and Ultravox were popular/successful in their own right (at least Ultravox was popular *after* Ure joined! :-) Ure joining L42 would be like Mark leaving L42 to join Dire Straits. However, Mark played on Ure's solo albums, though, so there has been some collaboration. I also think that Ure's solo stuff has a much different sound to it than L42 or King's Influences. I haven't heard his third album (it is reportedly *really* bad), but The Gift and Answers to Nothing are both pretty good. -Eric ------------------------------ From: Michael BROOKS Organization: Technology Date: Fri, 21 Apr 1995 11:15:07 GMT Subject: Kansas City Milkman....well cheesy! For all those trying to find political meaning in Kansas city Milkman, you will be hard pressed....the song refers to the fact that Mark was a milkman on the Isle Of Wight prior to superstardom and used to do his rounds ina pair of cowboy trousers. By the way, one track that has yet to appear in anyone's favourite gig list is Shapeshifter. i would have thought the muso's amongst us would have loved to have heard that live.
