I would like to know what everyone thinks are the best three songs by L42. I thought about asking for THE best song, but someone so eloquently pointed out re: best album, that that is like asking someone to choose his or her favorite child. So now you get to choose your favorite THREE children! I'll tally up the selections over the next week or two and post the results (which songs get the most votes) at that time. And, I'll kick it off. Here's my three favorites in no particular order: sorry, I couldn't resist - I just luv it too. Hey, Kadel, nobody does it better than you! question: what will next weeks' "fav 3" be? How 'bout "Fav Album Cover", or "Best Song to Cry To?", "Best Silly Uniform The Band Wore In A Concert Video" or my favorite "Last Song I Heard While They Were Still A Group And I Didn't Know The Breakup Was Coming"...the list goes on....(..."the sun goes up"?..) "...on second thought, let's not go to Camelot, it is a silly place!" - Professor Goodhumor Kadel, get me outta here PLEEEZE!!! I don't need this junk mail (and y'all don't need my junk mailings). BTW, how many back issues of People Magazine, The Star and the Enquirer do you keep around the house? ...hmmm, I wonder where I can join up for The Partridge Family Digest??? Naaaa, Prof. Kadel probably runs that one!.... Big Bad Big Ego Bill ------------------------------ From: "W.A. Sorry, Rob, I just could'nt resist - it's late and I'm still in the office, and it's..it's...it's like you had this sign on your back which said "Kick Me"... ANYWAY, I'm sure you'll retaliate with the usual pseudo-intelleuctual "wam is emotionally unstable/big egoed" or whatever comments carefully tailored to appeal to the similarly brain-dead such as yourself, so, TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT, you silly savage, you!!! ...so why do I feel like the beach bully who's turn it was to kick sand in the Good Professor Kadel's face?.....or was it more like that final, determined swat to the mosquito that woke you up in the middle of the night?.... ------------------------------ ------------------------------i------------------------------ From: the moxy woman Date: Tue, 8 Nov 1994 12:43:33 -0400 (EDT) Subject: 3 favourite songs Hmmmmmm.....this was a hard one to pin down, but i think i have got my three favourites. 1) Micro Kid 2) My Father's Shoes 3) Something About You Tally away! the moxy woman "Barbarella!" Floating Life is just a real strong tune, but the other 2 are strong tunes... this is the best overall represnetation of Level 42 I could think of. Augustin -- Augustin Chan aug @ ucsd.edu ------------------------------ From: eric (Eric J. Hansen) Date: Wed, 9 Nov 94 0:26:54 EST Subject: Favorite Tunes and "Changes" Hey ho... ok, after much deliberation, my favorite L42 tunes (in no particular order): "43" Lying Still Standing in the Light This was hard to choose, and I'm pissed that you limited it to three! :-) Here are more faves -- just for the record!! : Kansas City Milkman Hours By The Window Two Hearts Collide Leaving Me Now One In A Million and of course... Something About You I must say, though, the only song I can really think of that I _don't_ like is "The Ape" from Guaranteed... does anyone actually like this song?!?! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In other news: here are my recent acquisitions from Audiophile Imports: Mike Lindup "Changes": I haven't finished listening to this even once through, but it is _great_. No offense to long-time Mike fans, but this gives me alot more respect for him than before. I guess I had always thought of him as the "sidekick", but this album really touts his keyboard ability and excellent vocals. I think this is a "great at first and gets even better [grows on you]" vs. "killer but then old after a dozen listens" album. Notable players on the album include Manu Katche on drums (Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Tears for Fears, etc.), Pino Palladino on bass (Go West, Tears for Fears), and Dominic Miller (L42 "Guaranteed"). Sorry to say, but on a relative scale, this blows Mark's "Influences" away... L42 "Early Tapes": I already had this one, but I finally got it on CD. The recording quality is very good - similar to "Level 42", which I think is among their best in mixing/engineering (at least it sounds the best to me!) An amusing note: there is a typo on the liner notes - they say "were" rather than "where"... (anyone else notice that, or am I really that anal?!) L42 "The White Funky": all in all pretty good, but considerably less exciting than Physical Presence. This is a "bootleg" and lives up to its classification as one. It was recorded from the soundboard at a 1983 Zurich concert (I think while promoting "The Pursuit of Accidents"), but it would probably have been _much_ better IMHO had it been miked from the mixing booth rather than right from the board. Performance is good but if you don't like Physical Presence, don't bother to spend the US$30. Clearly a "must have" for all aspiring L42-completists, however. -Eric p.s. I'm pleased with Audiophile Imports service - fast and very well packaged. Prices are a bit high, however.
