From: cluker @ worldnet.fr (Christopher LUKER) Date: Sat, 16 Nov 1996 15:18:22 +0100 Drummer joke: I went to a party the other day, and when I arrived I noticed my fav. local band was there. I also noticed a strange guy standing outside on the porch, so I asked my friend who it was and he said "that`s our drummer, he`s always late and doesn`t know when to come in!" My uncle (a drummer himself) told me that one. If you don`t have LIVE AT WEMBLEY get it for Christmas, nothing beats our guys(and gal) LIVE! Thank you very much indeedie. ------------------------------ Subject: Claypool Defenders Club From: Jason Bell <106417.737 @ compuserve.com> Date: Sat, 7 Dec 1996 09:19:56 -0500 >>A Flavour Of The Month, as far as I'm concerned. John, I am only working on personal opinion. Please note the words 'As Far As *I* Am Concerned', the Level 42 Digest posed a question, I gave my opinion. I'm am currently playing Primus' 'Saling The Seas Of Cheese' to remind myself what I thought. I am not going to have any response to this posting. If I have offended any of my peers, as it appears, then I do apologise, John. Les makes music, you may make music, I make music. Let's continue to make music and interesting discussion. If wish to slag me off on my musical tastes (level 42, King Crimson, Garbage, Tish Hinojosa (!) Peter Gabriel) then please go ahead. I eagerly await an Email thrashing. Will (where have you been ?) > Having said all of that, most of us on the digest don't wan't to compete > with Will Lee for the spot on the next Michael McDonald album, so feel > free to listen and enjoy! Well, if Mr Lee can't be faffed that day, I'll do it instead. Saying that, you're slightly closer than I am to the studio. I also fancy doing a session where I don't really have to think. Jason ------------------------------ Subject: re: Similarities Engine From: "N.R. Birch" Date: Sat, 07 Dec 1996 10:12:08 -0600 (CST) Dave Weckl is a drummer who occasionally writes solo albums filled with totally insane drum parts. I have been wanting to buy his "Time's Up" (I think that is what it is called) disc becuase it is pretty cool. However, I can't really say with as much certainty as the search engine that all Level 42 fans would love his work. I think the bass playing was pretty intense on his albums too, but I havent heard them for about 4 years so I forget. And of course we all know who Jaco is..... No True Colours? No Standing in the Light? _My_ recommendation for your list would be those two albums- yea, they're earlier than World Machine, but the albums do a fantastic job of showing you where the WM stuff is coming from! (Also, they're in my top four L42 albums!) TCOY, Zaphod ------------------------------ Subject: Drummer... From: reb46 @ ix.netcom.com (S. I admit I'm a hard core fan of Nebraska being from Nebraska and that loss really upset me as well as millions of other Cornhusker fans. No excuses though. Texas just simply outplayed us. They were the better team. I would have loved to see if NE could've played Florida. Maybe one day. If any L42 fans are from Texas, you should be proud of your team. They won the first ever Big 12 Championship. It stills urks me that we lost, but life will go one. Sorry I don't have any L42 stuff. I just know we've had some comments on this game in a past digest. Damn! Oh well...I'll get over it........ Sorry to vent, Randall JUST WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!!!!!! (smile) ------------------------------ Subject: New User (sort of) From: "Jo-Anne Park" <691615 @ ican.net> Date: Sun, 8 Dec 1996 01:20:46 -0500 Hello. This is my first message to the Digest. I been reading for months through my sister's internet access, but I'm on now with my own address. This Digest is a dream come true for me. I've been a fan of Level 42 since 1982 when I first heard "Love Games" but have had virtually no contact with other fans in that time. My favorites are the no-holds-barred funk marathon instrumentals. (43, 88, Mr Pink, SandStorm, etc). This AYGB compilation has me over the moon. I love "42"! (How utilitarian! Just number the things! Are 1 - 41 stashed away in vault somewhere?!) I like the vocal songs too, don't get me wrong. It's hard to sing along with instrumentals in the car (unless they're Foundation & Empire and Beezer One!) I, myself am a bass player, like 95% of the other people here by the sound of it. I've played bass since 1973. Funny how Level 42 seems to attract bass players like you-know-what attracts flies! I play a Steinberger L2, which is a fine slappin', tappin', poppin' machine. Unfortunately most bands in Toronto wouldn't know what to do with a good funk, so I have to keep Mark in my pocket for most gigs. I remember seeing an advert in a local Toronto paper called "Now" magazine back in '87 from a band looking for a bass player. It stipulated "NO Mark Kings!" Hahaha! What I like on this Digest is the references to other groups that might appeal to someone who likes Level 42. I've blown a wad on CDs since starting to read the messages here (and a speaker in my car). Has anyone been collecting the Rhino records "History of Funk" series - In Yo' Face? It's not Level 42 frenetic funk but it's great stuff for us bottom feeders. Jo-Anne ------------------------------ Subject: Rareties From: Mikep3099 @ aol.com Date: Sun, 8 Dec 1996 04:24:28 -0500 Hi all, Hope everyone is getting ready for the holidays and is not having to hard a time with finals, those of you that are taking them anyway. Just a few quick questions about rareties that I have recently become aware of. This version of SAY on World of Dance New Wave Of the 80's, Has anyone figured out if it is a new version or an edit of one of the extended versions? Has anyone compared? Does anyone know if the Pink Rhythm single that Mark plays on a few tracks on was available on CD? I mean like a CD single with all the b-sides. int. versions etc. What countries was it available in? US? UK? Was the 12" that was mentioned US or Euro? I think the Morgan is the one that found it in France, but I'm not sure. At the Texas Levelfest, a couple of months ago, I met ,among all the other great folks, the wonderful and knowledgable Mikey 42. He told me of a 12" SINGLE for Mike Lindup's CHANGES. The flip is West Coast Man. He said that Changes is a remix. I am not writting to get someone to back him up on this claim, I certainly believe him, he has far more info on rareties than the vast majority of us, but unfortunatly even he doesn't own a copy. I am just trying to find out if anyone on the list owns ones of these, I assume, ultrarareties or has an specific info on it. Was it a promo only release? If so, where? Was it a limited issue in some country other than the UK? German, French, Dutch, Spanish? Could it only exist as a test pressing and was never pressed in any quanity or issued? Again, I am in NO way questioning the validity of this info, I had just never heard of this single and have been curious ever since he told me. I am interested in finding a copy and just need more info to start that search for it. If anyone has a copy please fill us in with the specifics. And Mikey, did you tell me that Ian had a copy or that he was the person that told you of this single? Maybe Ian could shed a little light? And lastly, I know I have asked this question before but i have never gotten a definetive answer. Is there REALLY a long version of Mark King's Clocks Go Forward? I know what the discog says, what every one assumes to be the case and what everyone has heard but have yet to hear from anyone that has the actual promo single release and the LP/CD and has compared the 2. Loz has sent me a tape of a tape that he has with it on it and that version is actually a minute SHORTER than the album version!! Mikey has a tape with it on it and it too is SHORTER than the album version!! Both the tape that Loz sent and Mikey's tape have dropouts throughout though so it is impossible to say if maybe the tape(s) that their copies came from might have just been incomplete or got ":stuck" periodically during recording. I am just curious to know if this alledged longversion does exists. If it does, I'll keep searching. BTW the version of I Feel Free from the 12" that Mikey had on the same tape clocked in LONGER than the album, longer enough that it can't be accounted for by tape speed variences. Go figure. I always thought that it was the one that was no different than the album version. Sorry to go on and to be so anal-retentive about these details re. these rareties but I really am trying to COMPLETE my collection and these are a some of the few things that I am lacking and am just curious about where is the best place to look and in the case of the last one, whether it really is longer. Thanks again to those involved with the AYGB CD. Yes, I finally got my copy. It was worth the wait. To those that were aware of my fathers recent severe illness and wished him well and set pryers our way THANKS! He is recovering quite well at last. Hope some one can help with some of the above questions and that everyone has wonderful holidays, Peace, Mike ------------------------------ Subject: SATS: Bad Mix? From: Elson Trinidad Date: Sun, 08 Dec 1996 01:22:46 -0800 Just crossed my mind lately: A lot of people here, it seems, rate "Staring At The Sun" as one of L42's worst, or at least not on the better side of their work. I sort of agree, but I think a lot of this has to do with the mix of the album. I've been listening to it this week and re-affirmed my earlier belief: This album was poorly mixed. If you compare the production quality of the album, it is *very* midrangey, and IMHO the reverb is overkill in some songs. Throughout their history, the production quality of their albums change, and a great deal of this is due to technology (the recording studio of 1994 is radically different than the recording studio of 1980), but "World Machine," which came out in the band's midpoint (and height) of their career has an almost timeless quality - the mix, even done back in 1985, still sounds great today. Which leads me to this: Wouldn't it be cool if someone re-mixed and re-mastered SATS? It would sound a heck of a lot better (when I mean "re-mixed" I don't mean make 'remixes' out of all the songs, but to mix the songs as they are with different track levels, effect settings, etc.). There are some great songs on that album that suffer from a very cloudy, midrangey mix, like "Heaven In My Hands," "Over There" and "Take A Look". Hey Loz, could you ask Mr. Crockford if he'd let me borrow the master multitrack tapes for a week? :) Elson -30- ======================================== Elson Trinidad Los Angeles, CA, USA elson @ westworld.com * http://www.westworld.com/~elson =======================================
