King's Best song books ------------------------------ From: "Lars-Ove Karlsson" Organization: IAR SYSTEMS AB Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1993 15:44:35 CET Subject: Re: Songbooks There are four songbooks available, I have a list at home with ISBN numbers for all. The only one I remember (and own) are Level Best (All 18 tracks from CD) but I think the songbooks are for the last albums! Mark King tracks: Mr Pink live is really something plus the Flamenco part on The Essential from his solo album. Also the 12" version of A way you'll never be where Mark King plays with Gary Barnacle and his partner is nice at the end of the song. Plus all bass solos of course. I like the one on the live tape from the Staring At The Sun Tour that was available from the Fan club (Wembley 12 jan 1989). I'll get the ISBN numbers tomorrow if somebody hasn't beaten me to it. Not in Canada! I bought "Pursuit" and "Level 42" on CD recently (last 6 months) and had no trouble finding them in any store (they weren't imports or anything). The only "hard-to-find" L42 CDs (NOT TAPE) in Canada are the UK version of "World Machine" (w/ "Good Man In A Storm" ,etc.) and "The Early Tapes". Maybe you might want to try someplace like the CD Bar in Toronto (they have a toll-free North American number- but I don't know it offhand). >2) Mark King's best work is on what album? on what track? > The track doesn't necessarily have to be off of the same album. > > For me, his best album's work is World Machine but the track Pursuit > of Accidents is far and away his best single effort. My favourite Mark King bass work IMHO is on that instrumental on "Level42" (NOT "Heathrow" but the one that is mostly bass - damn I wish I could rememebr the name right now - seems to me it's called "Desert Tune" or something like that - YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN! ) Although not the flashiest/fastest/funkiest playing cmpared to other trakcs, his playing on the track has a melodic soufulness that is stunning IMHO. YES! And it's closer than you think! If you have Gopher access, you can look under the Commercial Services directory and select the Compact Disc Connection gopher. If not, simply telnet 157.151.0.1 and you're connected. Once connected, when the prompt asks you, "Holonet member name" simply type "cdc" and you're in the Compact Disc Connection. Go to the database and enter "Level 42" and it will display a few level 42 selections: "World Machine" (U.S. Version), "Running In The Family," "Guaranteed," "Level Best," AS WELL AS "The Early Tapes" and "The Remixes." I believe "The Early Tapes" go for $12.99 or so. Not bad. Yes, you can order your CDs online, with a credit card. Enjoy! Does anyone > know if this means that Jakko has quit Level 42 ? I think I heard somewhere that Jakko himself was American. But what is this American guitarist's name? I'm curious. Dominic Miller again, eh? This has been the third consecutive studio album (I would also guess the "Take Care of Yourself" single as well) that miller has played on. Does anyone know which songs does he play on exactly? Unlike Holdsworth's work, which is *instantly* recognizable, it's hard to track Miller's style. Yes, I know Miller has been Sting's guitarist for the past few years, but I still can't place his style. SPEAKING of new album, does it mention the name of the next album? When it is coming ou, exactly? I'm dying to know!!!! > In the same newsletter (or was it the previous one) Mark King > mentions a new solo album, any news on this? ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS NEWSLETTER!!!!!! I *MUST* SEE IT! Is there an easy and convenient way to post the newsletter text online? If there is, could someone do it? Check out the "A Physical Presence" live album(s). I recommend the cassette/ record versions to the CD because the double albums contain 3 more tracks than the single CD version. Regardless, all version include the live version of "Love Games," which begins with an AWESOME bass solo, starting with a snippet of "Dune Tune" (from "Level 42") and diverging into a hyperspeed slapping frenzy. > Funny that Mark King doesn't seem to be highly regarded by some bass players. > I can't understand why. Fly to the other side of the Atlantic and you'll see some high regard. Over here, people like Les Claypool (who's very creative, very fast, but very un-musical, plus his voice doesn't count as singing) and Flea (very good as well, but he doesn't sing while he plays) get more credit. Face it, King is underrated. Oh well, *WE* know who's best. :) > Oh, there's another good part on this video on...Chinese Way maybe? I really > don't remember, but the part is Mike Lindup is away from his keyboard rig > clapping his hands or something and all of a sudden realizes his part should > be playing *now*. He gets back to his keybaords a couple measures too late > and I think I remember Mark laughing at him. I thought it was pretty funny. It's "The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)" Mike jumps around the stage while Mark does his bass thang, then comes Mike's keyboard part, and misses half a measure. Now, Lindup doesn't use a wireless headset mic when he plays. Hmm...wonder why? :) Other points of interest in the "Live At Wembley" video: *** During Boon's "Lessons In Love" guitar solo, when he plays the high note, he doesn't bend it right, and the result is this awkward shriek. Boon looks at Mark and grins. *** Check out Phil Gould's goofy, "Hey, world, look at me!" smile when the camera focuses on him. This same shot comes up twice in the videotape. > I could go for a World Machine meets Pursuit of Accidents. I think the songs > on World Machine were engineered and produced really well. Same with > Running in the family. I enjoy all f L42's phases and I'm glad they do expand and do other things rather than the same stuff over and over again. I appreciate the earlier stuff, and it's real cool, but it's not that much different than late 70s-early 80s Chick Corea or Weather Report (except with a slapping bass). I'm more partial to their pop songs, which is mostly due in part the fact that I am a songwriter also and that my interest in L42 began at this phase in their career. I think their pop songs are more musically intelligent and well-written than most pop songs I hear. I own several L42 albums and never really get tired of listening to them. The best thing about their pop tunes is that they are ORIGINAL...I mean, when "Something About You" came out, did it remind you of any song you heard before? It blew me away! Same could be said for "Lessons In Love" and "Children Say." In the normal pop music realm, everyone is biting off each other's ideas. Not with Level 42. BTW, my band is doing some Level 42 covers. The one's we've really been working on are "Love Games" and "Overtime" (from "Guaranteed"). If we record them, and anyone is interested, I'll see if I can make them available on the Net. This info comes from the Level 42 fanzine The Pursuit Of 42 issue 4/5.
