Subject: Level 42 Digest, #20 ===================== * LEVEL 42 DIGEST * ===================== Digest 20 Wednesday, 09/08/93 Today's topics: Bands With Similar styles to Level 42 Petition? ------------------------------ From: etrinida @ scf.usc.edu (The Subway Beast) Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1993 12:20:03 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Bands With Similar styles to Level 42 LEVEL 42 IS IN A LEAGUE ALL THEIR OWN! :) But seriously, Go West in some ways is similar (I'm a big fan of theirs too), but they have more R&B influences. Keep in mind Level 42's early influences were Weather Report, Earth, Wind and Fire, Stanley Clarke, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Chick Corea.Even some old blues musicians. That's where the "How How How" line came from in "Physical Presence" from 'World Machine' - some blues guy used it in his songs. China Crisis, maybe. Tears For Fears, hmm.. more of a Steey Dan+ Beatles mixture. But the thing that got me into L42 was that they sounded like no one else I had heard of before. Hmmm... Ever hear of Nik Kershaw? He's kinda like early Howard Jones mixed with Level 42... In fact Mark King played guest bass on one of his songs ("Easy" from the album 'The Riddle.') In fact that was THE first song where I heard Mark's bass playing. I heard it and thought, "Whoa! This Level 42 band HAS to sound good!" I HAVE heard of some bands that have been inspired by L42...Ever remember a band called "Living In A Box"? They had a song called "Living In a Cardboard Box" or something, AND THEY STOLE THE BASSLINE DIRECTLY FROM "HOT WATER!" There was also some female R&B singer, American, whose name escapes me who debuted around the same time L42 got big in the US (circa 1986). The bassline to the song was a ripoff of "The Chant Has Begun"! Anyone hear of a British band called "The Brand New Heavies?" some of the stuff off their first album sounded like old L42. Very jazzy and funky, in a retro kind of way. My dream concert is to see L42 and have the Brand New Heavies open up for them. YEAH!!!! Just wondering, for those of you Level 42 fans in the United States and canada, especially, a friend of mine suggested I ask this to the mailing list: Anyone interested in starting a petition to request a few Level 42 live performances in North America? They haven't played live in the US since 1987. America has quite a few hungry, starving fans just WANTING to see Level 42 live. This is just for fun, but hey We can forward this to Paul Crockford (L42 s manager) and see what happens. Dream Crazy, Elson
