Level 42 VHS tapes available on Internet via telnet! Bands with similar styles to Level 42? ------------------------------ From: eric (Eric J. Hansen) Date: Tue, 7 Sep 93 11:56:05 EDT Subject: RARRR! Ok! It's fixed NOW! SOOOORRRRYYY!!! I know, I know... you got *three* (or was it four!) digests which all had the same lame apology. Well, I just fixed the problem. You guys just have to understand that I keep adding nifty features to the digest software, but every time I do it, some weird problems creep in (read: stupid bugs). Oh well. It's ok (for the time being). Eric (your humble mailing list administrator) *---------------------------------------------------------------------* | Eric J. I just found out about a new Internet service called ILC Online (and "no", I'm not affiliated!!) Anyways, after you register for a new account, you have access to a variety of product offerings, including CDs, VHS cassettes and books. Just for kicks, I checked out what they had for Level 42 VHS, and they have "Level Best" and "Fait Accompli" available for $17.96 each. I don't know what the shipping charges are, but if you're domestic U.S., I'm sure it's not a bad deal. The whole purchase transaction can be done with a credit card (Amex) in a few minutes. To play with this service, try telnetting to "columbia.ilc.com" and log into the ILC Online service. Oh, I also looked at the CD offerings, but all they had was Guaranteed for $14.xx (or thereabouts). For you Kraftwerk fans (Lazlo!), they had a decent selection, but none that you don't already have! I've been thinking about this recently, and this is what I've come up with: China Crisis. I only have one of their albums, "What Price Paradise", but it seems to ring the same bells in my musical appreciation registers. I think they offer a similar mix of pop/funk/"something-slightly-different." Go West. Other than having Alan Murphy as their guitarist at one point (who, FYI, was on "Staring at the Sun"), I think these guys have something going on akin to Level 42. They seem to excel in the "kind-of-dancy" pop sound, similar to stuff on World Machine and Running in the Family. I'm also adding Tears for Fears and Talk Talk. These may be more of a "reach" for comparison, but for some intangible reason, I've always classified them with each other, and then both with Level 42. I think they are all included in the "progressive pop" scene, to coin a new genre. [BTW, the new TFT album "Elemental" is great!] Oh, here's another thought... Gary Barnacle, who played sax on a few Level 42 albums, has done studio work with a bunch of other bands. I think he may be on Go West, but I *know* he also played on Paul Hardcastle's album -- the one which the song "19" (about Vietnam veterans) came from. Anyone know if Krys Mach has done any other studio work? I actually like Gary B's sound better than Krys', but I think Krys has made more of a contribution to the band... Mark King talks briefly about Krys in the Fait Accompli video. - Eric p.s. One more *totally random* tangent... Pino Palladino played bass on the first Go West album. I remember seeing him on another album by another band, but I can't remember what it is! Anyone know?! Geez - I'm a freak... *---------------------------------------------------------------------* | Eric J. Hansen .................... eric @ enterprise.bih.harvard.edu | | ....
